Mookuthi Amman 2: Maha Sakthi Movie Review: An overstuffed divine mess of a sequel

Mookuthi Amman 2Movie Synopsis:Shakti, a cop, has recurring nightmares about a village called Mylanchi. Once there, she finds herself at the centre of a supernatural battle involving goddesses and powerful adversaries.Mookuthi Amman 2 Movie Review:Sundar C’s Mookuthi Amman 2 has got very little of what made its predecessor, RJ Balaji and NJ Saravanan’s Mookuthi Amman, work. Mookuthi Amman was an engaging comedy that made a sharp point about self-proclaimed godmen who exploit religious beliefs. That film managed to entertain while questioning blind faith. The sequel, on the other hand, takes a completely different route. It moves away from the original’s core and dives headfirst into a world of goddesses, Satan, spiritual intermediaries and supernatural conflicts.Mookuthi Amman 2 tells a completely different story, retaining only the titular character from the original. Of course, with a different director and a new story this time around, one cannot expect the sequel to follow a similar template and replicate its predecessor. Nor does it necessarily have to. But when a film is made as a sequel to carry forward a franchise, it should have some reason to exist in its predecessor’s world beyond its titular character being the same. It is difficult to understand why this film needed to be a Mookuthi Amman sequel at all. Sundar C could just as well have called it Aranmanai 5. The problem, therefore, is not that the film takes the franchise in a different direction, but that it fails to build an engaging story or screenplay around that change. The film follows Shakti (Nayanthara), a cop who has been experiencing recurring nightmares. Her visions feature a warrior riding a horse and a village called Mylanchi. She travels to Mylanchi to find out the root cause of her dreams. Once there, the past and present begin to intertwine, with a string of antagonists played by a committed Regina Cassandra, Duniya Vijay and Garuda Ram, entering one after the other. Urvashi plays Nayanthara’s mother. She is expected to be the comic relief for much of the film while also bringing emotional heft to the latter portions. As she has pulled off both with ease in the first instalment, who better than her to play the role? But even a performer of her calibre can only do so much with material that lacks substance. Yogi Babu’s comedy track single-handedly derails the film’s flow. Towards the end, Sundar C introduces an unnecessarily long comedy stretch in which the father of the Yogi Babu character’s would-be bride tries to get someone else to tie the thaali around her neck on the eve of her wedding. It feels as though the director realised the film was getting too serious for too long and decided to bring in Yogi Babu for some comic relief. Unfortunately, what follows is one poorly conceived and problematic joke after another. Hiphop Tamizha’s music does little to improve matters. The songs barely register, while the BGM is unnecessarily loud and makes its presence register a little too much. The VFX is another major letdown. For a film that relies so heavily on supernatural elements, the visual effects fail to lend any credibility to the film’s world. It takes away from the experience rather than adding to it. Nayanthara’s screen presence works in the film’s favour. She has an otherworldly quality about her that sits perfectly well with the character of a goddess. Though Regena’s styling feels completely at odds with the period her character belongs to, the actress gives her all to her role. For a film that has so much happening on screen, Mookuthi Amman 2 is a tedious watch that mistakes scale for entertainment. The film seems to believe that the more characters, conflicts, supernatural elements and comedy it packs in, the more entertaining it will be. Unfortunately, with its weak screenplay, misplaced comedy and poorly executed visual effects, Mookuthi Amman 2 struggles to make its fantasy world come alive.
