Would you pay $25,000 for William Shatner’s kidney stone? The online casino GoldenPalace did so in 2006. They would later auction it off for $75,000 and use these proceeds, along with another $25k from Shatner’s ‘Boston Legal’ co-stars, to build houses for people in need through Habitat for Humanity.
“A home in Louisiana and a family of five, last time I checked, was living in that house,” said Shatner most recently on the Dropping Names with Brent and Jonny podcast.
While this auction for a kidney stone ended up being for a good cause, it’s still a bit off-kilter, to say the least. The following examples are no exception, with many not abiding by the former qualifier.
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s ‘Air Molecules’
A Mason jar popped up on eBay in 2005, claiming to contain “air molecules” belonging to Pitt and Jolie. The two, at the time, were Hollywood’s newest power couple as they were riding ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith’s’ high.
Bidding began at $9.99, with the seller saying, “We are not guaranteeing this air sample contains air molecules that came in contact with any celebrity epidermal layer or respiratory system, but the sample was captured in the proximity of the celebrities and air molecules that did come in direct contact.”
The jar ended up selling for $75,000.
Justin Bieber’s Hair
In March 2011, Bieber cut off his iconic shaggy bowl cut and went for a shorter version. He would then bring a box of his hair clippings to Ellen DeGeneres’s talk show to show off the change.
This lock of his hair would then show up on eBay and sell for $40,668, which is quite a lot for a teenager’s hair.
The online buyer was revealed to be none other than GoldenPalace, and the proceeds from the auction were donated in full to the Gentle Barn Foundation.
Judy Garland’s Ruby Slippers
Perhaps the ‘holy grail’ of Hollywood memorabilia, these slippers were worn by Garland while she played Dorothy in 1939’s ‘Wizard of Oz’.
Three of the four pairs of slippers used during the production of the movie were found by costume designer Kent Warner. The slippers were then sold to Michael Shaw.
The ones that eventually found themselves being auctioned off at Heritage Auctions went for a whopping $28 million. After adding in the buyer’s premium, they would sell for over $32 million.
While these aren’t necessarily “weird,” the price that they commanded, combined with them being worn on someone else’s feet, does solidify their place on this list.
Scarlett Johansson’s Used Tissue
We’re now back with an auction that truly is strange. ‘ScarJo’, in 2008, appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and revealed that she had caught a cold from her co-star at the time, Samuel L. Jackson.
And of course, in times of a cold, you tend to go through a fair number of tissues. Leno offered her one to blow her nose, which also left a bit of her lipstick on it.
She sealed this used tissue in a plastic bag and auctioned it off on eBay. It drew in 83 bids and eventually sold for $5,300.
The silver lining to this truly absurd sale is that all proceeds from the auction went to the hunger-relief charity USA Harvest.
Justin Timberlake’s French Toast
The NSYNC frontman had a radio interview with Z-100 in New York in 2000. As expected, he was offered food during his visit to the station. Unfortunately, he could not finish what he was given and thus left two pieces of French toast.
This led staff members to come up with a ‘genius’ idea: putting his unfinished toast up for auction. Unbeknownst to them, the toast was quite the desired product.
Kathy Summers, a 19-year-old from Madison, Wisconsin, ended up buying the food for $1,025. She claimed she intended to freeze-dry the toast to preserve it. It’s unclear if, after 26 years, she kept her word.
