Spirit Circle Becomes Tatsuo Sato’s Final Directorial Work

Tatsuo Sato, known for works including Martian Successor Nadesico, Bodacious Space Pirates and Stellvia, served as both director and series composer on Spirit Circle. Sato died of liver failure in April 2026 at the age of 61, making the anime his final directorial work.

Production continued under assistant director Kentaro Mizuno and the rest of the staff, carrying forward Sato’s vision until the series was completed. Animation production is jointly handled by NAGOMI and EOTA, both part of the TWIN ENGINE group.

NAGOMI, EOTA and TWIN ENGINE expressed their gratitude for Sato’s contribution to the production and said the staff had worked together to complete the anime while carrying on his intentions.

Original creator Satoshi Mizukami thanked the staff and Sato for bringing the manga to animation despite the challenge of depicting seven different lives across different eras and settings. Mizuno described the adaptation as an 18-episode coming-of-age science fiction adventure centered on reincarnation.

    Introduction

    Introduction

Spirit Circle follows middle school student Fuuta Okeya, who can see spirits, and the mysterious transfer student Kouko Ishigami.

Fuuta’s peaceful school life changes when Kouko suddenly tries to kill him. Her reason lies in a connection between the two that stretches back through their past lives.

To discover the truth, Fuuta uses the Spirit Circle, an object that allows him to experience his previous lives. His journey takes him through multiple incarnations spanning ancient times to the future, as he and Kouko repeatedly confront each other in different eras and different forms.

The newly released teaser visual focuses on Kouko, showing her staring forward with a large wound on her forehead. Its tagline reads, “No matter how many times we’re reborn, I’ll come to kill you.”

The first promotional video opens with Kouko, voiced by Anna Nagase, asking Fuuta, voiced by Kazuki Ura, whether he believes in reincarnation. It also introduces Rune, voiced by Eri Yukimura, and East, voiced by Yuichi Nakamura.

Anna Nagase Performs the Ending Theme

The ending theme is titled “Koko ga Donna Sekai demo” and is performed by Anna Nagase, who voices Kouko Ishigami.

The song marks Nagase’s first solo vocal track. In her comment, she described being drawn to the song’s words and said she approached it while holding both the cruelty and affection found within the work’s world.
