Warning:This article contains spoilers for AVENGERS #1, out now!
In 2007’s AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #545, Peter Parker made a deal with the devil. After unmasking himself during the events of CIVIL WAR (2006), Spider-Man fatally put Aunt May in the crossfires of his decision. To save her life and restore Spidey’s secret identity, Peter and Mary Jane offered their marriage to Mephisto. Now, in AVENGERS #1 by Chip Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto, that deal has been rendered void and the universe has come to collect its due.
“I’m beyond excited to finally have Avengers #1 out in the world!” shared Zdarsky. “It’s obviously gorgeous thanks to Marco and Matt, but I’m hoping it’s also funny and exciting and gets readers excited for what’s to come!”
In AVENGERS #2,the stakes for Spider-Man have never been higher as his past choices once more put Aunt May in peril. As Spidey and his allies race to stop chaos from unraveling on Earth, they’ll face the Adjudicator, who will stop at nothing to balance the scales of Mephisto’s nullified contracts.
See Spider-Man confront his deal with the devil in the preview below!
As for who nullified the devil’s deeds? That would be Steve Rogers and Doctor Doom, who joined forces to usurp Mephisto from his throne in CAPTAIN AMERICA (2025) #12- #16. Doom claimed Hell as his new dominion and rendered void all of Mephisto’s contracts, sending the demon packing. But the devil does not sit idly by.
The devil and his contracts are finished and now the universe won’t stop until both of us are dead.
As Spider-Man rallies a new team of heroes, in AVENGERS #4, Mephisto assembles his own legion of villains to take down this burgeoning team of Avengers. Enter Mephisto’s Sinister Six, with Abomination, Sabretooth, Kraven the Hunter, Carnage, and Green Goblin (?!) all joining the devil’s side. It’s Hell on Earth for a sinister showdown — and for Spider-Man, everything is at stake!
