Digital subscription revenue rises 14.6 percent as the results sharpen the product and retention challenge for Korean media

    Jung Han | CEO, K-EnterTech Hub | Entertainment technology journalist | 2026-11-05

The New York Times has accelerated digital subscriber growth, adding 420,000 digital-only subscribers in the third quarter of 2026 after adding 280,000 in the previous quarter. Its portfolio of journalism, games, cooking, sports and product recommendations puts a practical question before Korean publishers: what gives a reader a reason to return directly and keep paying?

Results released on November 4 put total paid subscribers at 13.76 million, including 13.22 million digital-only subscribers. The 13.8 million figure in news coverage is rounded. Digital-only net additions reached 1.46 million over the past year, while the company is targeting 15 million total subscribers by the end of 2027.

    Metric Q3 2026 Change
Total paid subscribers 13.76 million —
    Digital-only subscribers 13.22 million +420,000 vs Q2
    Revenue $768.5 million +9.7% YoY
Digital subscription revenue $421.3 million +14.6%
Digital ad revenue $109.9 million +12.0%
Adjusted operating profit $149.6 million +13.9%
    Digital-only ARPU $9.93 +1.4% YoY

Subscriptions anchor revenue while advertising expands

Third-quarter revenue rose 9.7 percent year over year to $768.5 million. Digital-only subscription revenue increased 14.6 percent to $421.3 million, or approximately 54.8 percent of total revenue. Digital advertising grew 12 percent to $109.9 million, and affiliate, licensing and other revenue rose 6.2 percent to $78.4 million.

Subscriptions and advertising expanded together. Direct payments provide a recurring revenue base alongside advertising and referral income. The results do not establish that bundling caused advertising growth: the company attributed the digital advertising increase primarily to marketer demand and additional advertising supply.

Print subscribers fell to 540,000 from 570,000 a year earlier. The transition is therefore still under way. Digital growth has become large enough to support expansion even as the print subscriber base contracts.

The test comes after the introductory price

Digital-only average revenue per user was $9.93, up 1.4 percent year over year. This is a company-defined measure based on a 28-day billing cycle, rather than a monthly list price. Subscribers moving from promotional rates to higher prices, along with increases for some established subscribers, contributed to the gain. ARPU was essentially flat against the second quarter, when it was $9.94.

Chief executive Meredith Kopit Levien attributed subscriber growth to engagement and retention across the portfolio. Games, Cooking, Wirecutter and The Athletic give users different reasons to visit alongside the core news report. The strategic interpretation is that trusted journalism can attract payment while useful daily products help sustain the relationship.

That interpretation has limits. Consolidated results do not isolate each product’s contribution to acquisition or cancellation prevention. They cannot establish how many game users became news subscribers, or how much better a bundle retained customers than a single product. Those questions require product-level evidence.

    Investment rises alongside profit

Adjusted operating costs increased 8.7 percent to $618.9 million, reflecting higher compensation and benefits, general and administrative expenses, and marketing and promotion costs. Revenue nevertheless grew faster, lifting adjusted operating profit 13.9 percent to $149.6 million. The adjusted margin reached 19.5 percent, up about 0.8 percentage points. GAAP operating profit was $121.9 million.

Levien said the company continued investing in growth areas including video. The quarter illustrates profit growth alongside higher spending, rather than a simple reduction in operating capacity. It does not, however, disclose how much subscription revenue particular video investments generated.

For the fourth quarter, management projected digital-only subscription revenue growth of 12 to 15 percent and adjusted operating cost growth of 6 to 8 percent. These are forecasts; conversion from introductory prices, subscriber additions and advertising demand remain relevant variables.

    What Korean media can apply

Korean publishers need a starting point suited to their own audiences. A Korean-language publication operates in a different addressable market from a global English-language brand. Copying the NYT product list is less useful than identifying a recurring reader need that the publisher is qualified to serve.

A specialist business publisher could connect reporting with company and policy databases, practical briefings and expert events. A broadcaster could connect its content library with fan communities, while accounting for video delivery and rights costs. These are possible applications of the model, not findings about the current performance of individual Korean companies.

A bundle also requires coherent login, billing, service discovery and product design. More included products do not automatically produce better economics. Publishers need to establish whether the combined service improves retention enough to cover its delivery and acquisition costs.

Useful measures include paid retention after promotions expire, cancellations by acquisition channel, ARPU, customer acquisition cost and payback period, and the share of visits made directly. Tracking bundle and single-product cohorts separately would help reveal which services support renewal.

The NYT still has to reach its 15 million subscriber target while sustaining revenue per user and profitability. For Korean media, the operational task is to connect distinctive reporting with products readers repeatedly use. That connection must be demonstrated in renewed payments and sustainable margins.

Notes: ARPU uses a 28-day cycle. Adjusted operating profit is non-GAAP. Revenue share calculated from reported figures. Cover: AI-generated concept illustration of subscriptions and daily reader habits; not an actual NYT product screen.
