Meta has partnered with Lionsgate to convert The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping into 3D for its theatrical release on November 20, with the film set to be available in 3D on Meta VR Glasses from spring 2027.

Meta said this is the first time it has partnered with a Hollywood studio to convert a feature film into 3D to support a theatrical release. Advance tickets for 3D screenings are on sale now.

The conversion was done with DNEG, the Oscar-winning visual effects and animation studio, which Meta described as having worked in stereo 3D conversion for more than 15 years. Director Francis Lawrence, who has directed the last five Hunger Games films, was also involved.

Once the prequel finishes its run in cinemas, it will be available to watch in 3D on Meta VR Glasses. Lionsgate will announce further feature titles for the device, and when they will be available, at a later date.

The Thanksgiving release is expected to earn between $60 million and $70 million in its North American opening.

Meta VR Glasses were shown at Meta Connect 2026 and are due in stores in spring 2027. The company said the glasses feature a 5K Infinite Display, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos spatial audio and IMAX Enhanced support. A pair weighs about 100 grams.

In a statement, Meta said the conversion “reflects our ongoing commitment to expanding the library of 3D content for our VR devices, as well to partner with the industry’s leading studios and filmmakers”. The company added that users can already watch a range of TV shows and films in VR on its devices.

The Hunger Gamesdeal has no AI component. It does, however, bring together a studio that has been open about using AI and a technology company that has been building AI products, including its personal AI agent Meta Muse, which launched in September.

Over the summer, Meta faced criticism from parts of Hollywood, including the talent agency CAA, after it introduced Meta Image AI on its social media platforms. The feature let users create an AI-generated image of a person by entering that person’s public Instagram handle.

Lionsgate partnered with AI research company Runway two years ago to generate video from its intellectual property. Runway built and trained a new AI model meant to help Lionsgate Studios, its filmmakers and other creative staff augment their work. In June, Lionsgate took an equity stake in Runway and plans to use its film library for an AI-generated short-form series.

The five Hunger Games films released so far have grossed more than $3.3 billion at the global box office. Lionsgate has also expanded the franchise with a stage production in London and a theme park attraction in Dubai.
