Today in Entertainment: Looking back at the early days of radio

Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — Radio has brought generations of listeners breaking news, sports and entertainment. But what would it have been like to hear some of history’s biggest moments as they happened?

On Today in Entertainment, Morning Anchor Sarah Boyette and Meteorologist Randy Turner looked back at the early days of radio and shared which historic broadcasts they would want to hear firsthand.

Nov. 2 marks an important milestone in broadcasting history. In 1920, Pittsburgh radio station KDKA broadcast the results of the presidential election between Warren G. Harding and James Cox, giving Americans a new way to follow major events as they happened.

For Turner, the conversation brought back memories of his own start in broadcasting. He shared that he began working at KSTA in Coleman, Texas, as a high school freshman.

“I started as a freshman in high school at the local radio station KSTA in Coleman, Texas,” Turner said. “And loved radio broadcasting. Always have.”

When asked which historic broadcast he would go back in time to hear, Turner chose Orson Welles’ famous 1938 “War of the Worlds” broadcast. The fictional alien invasion was presented through realistic news bulletins, leading some listeners to believe Martians were actually landing on Earth.

“That was something that captivated the whole country,” Turner said.

Boyette had a different moment in mind. She said she would want to hear the first Super Bowl in 1967 between the Green Bay Packers and Kansas City Chiefs.

The two discussed how radio listeners had to rely on announcers to paint a picture of the action without being able to see it.

“That’s theater of the mind,” Turner said.

From a fictional Martian invasion to the first Super Bowl, the conversation highlighted the storytelling that made radio such an important part of broadcasting history and continues to connect audiences today.
