What is A Love Other Than Yours about?

Ho Nam Gung (Seo Kang Joon) and Lee Mi Do (Ahn Eun Jin) have been part of each other’s lives since they were seven. They started dating at 26 and have now spent almost ten years together. But somewhere along the way, their relationship has lost its spark. What once felt comfortable has become predictable, and neither seems sure how to bring back what they have lost.

Their history is also tied to a tragedy from their childhood. Nam Gung survived a coastal accident that took Mi Do’s father’s life, something he has struggled to move on from. Over the years, he has felt responsible for Mi Do and her family, trying to make up for what happened by always being there for her. He goes out of his way to keep her happy and shield her from difficulties, but his constant need to look after her has started to feel more like control than care.

Mi Do, meanwhile, is trying to figure out what she wants from life. A film director who has taken a break from work after feeling emotionally drained, she begins to realise that her relationship with Nam Gung has left her with little room to stand on her own. She doesn’t want someone who will keep making things easier for her. She wants to be able to make her own choices, face challenges and grow as a person.

Their already strained relationship becomes more complicated with the arrival of Han Tae Sung (Lee Joo Ahn), a lawyer who takes up pro bono cases. He pushes Mi Do to confront what she has been avoiding and encourages her to return to filmmaking. Meanwhile, Nam Gung finds himself dealing with the attention of his junior colleague, Park Sua (Jo Aram), who makes no secret of her feelings for him.

What happens over the course of 13 episodes

The first few episodes make it clear that Nam Gung and Mi Do are no longer happy together, even if neither is ready to admit it. They have tried breaking up before, only to find themselves going back to each other. This time, they decide to announce their wedding plans, hoping that marriage might somehow bring back the spark. But their problems don’t disappear. Mi Do begins questioning her career choices after several disagreements with Tae Sung, while Nam Gung gets caught up in a corporate corruption investigation at work, which brings him closer to Sua.

As they spend more time with Tae Sung and Sua, both begin to experience feelings they haven’t felt in their own relationship for a long time. The first snowfall marks a turning point, with their attention slowly shifting towards other people. Things get messier when Mi Do wakes up in Tae Sung’s office. Unsure how Nam Gung will react, she tries to keep the incident from him, but the truth eventually comes out. For Nam Gung, the discovery is another blow to a relationship that is already struggling to hold together.

The arrangement, however, is far from simple. Sua continues to be there for Nam Gung, refusing to give up on him despite knowing how complicated his situation is. Tae Sung, meanwhile, wants Mi Do to stop looking back and make choices that are right for her. As the 30 days pass, Nam Gung and Mi Do are forced to look at their relationship more honestly than they have in years. The biggest turning point comes in episode 13, when Nam Gung finally talks about the guilt he has carried for 29 years over the death of Mi Do’s father.

His confession puts many things into perspective. Nam Gung’s constant need to look after Mi Do was not just an expression of love. He had spent years believing that surviving the accident meant he owed something to her and her family. Taking care of Mi Do became his way of dealing with that guilt, even if he never openly acknowledged it. But what he considered love and protection had also left Mi Do with little room to make her own choices. Over time, their relationship became less about what they wanted from each other and more about a responsibility neither knew how to walk away from.

A Love Other Than Yours ending explained

In the finale, Nam Gung and Mi Do meet at a church after their 30-day break. By now, both have realised that getting back together would mean falling into the same patterns that brought them to this point. They talk about their relationship and what they have meant to each other, but eventually decide to part ways. There is no big confrontation or exchange of bitter words. Just two people coming to terms with the fact that being together for so many years is not reason enough to keep a relationship going. For once, they choose to let go instead of trying to make things work out of habit.

The drama then moves two years ahead, showing how both have moved on with their lives. Mi Do has returned to her professional path and is now a university lecturer, while Nam Gung has made his way back to Korea. There is also a surprise when it comes to their love lives. She reunites with Tae Sung, with the two sharing a kiss, while he finds his way back to Sua. Both give their new relationships a chance, bringing an unexpected turn to a story that initially seemed to be about whether the longtime couple could overcome their differences and find their way back to each other.

What does the final beach scene mean?

Even after finding some kind of happiness with other people, Nam Gung and Mi Do have one last moment together. The two bump into each other in an elevator and decide to visit the beach. Their story is back to where it all began. When they spot a child struggling in the water, both rush in to save them. The incident takes them back to the childhood accident that has stayed with them for years, but this time, things end differently.

Mi Do finally says what Nam Gung has needed to hear all these years. She tells him that surviving the accident was a miracle, not a curse. For nearly three decades, he has blamed himself for her father’s death, believing he somehow owed her and her family for being the one who made it out alive. Her words help him see that he was never responsible for what happened. Before they part ways, Nam Gung hands her a drawing of her that he made back in high school. It is a quiet gesture, but one that brings back everything they have shared, from their childhood memories to the years they spent trying to make their relationship work.

A Love Other Than Yours makes a simple but honest point: a relationship doesn’t have to last forever to have meant something. They did love each other, but somewhere along the way, that love became tangled with guilt, comfort and a sense of obligation. Their final goodbye is about accepting what they meant to each other and finally giving themselves the chance to move on.
