Nashville Opera is putting a superhero twist on opera this month, bringing “Fortuna the Time Bender vs. The Schoolgirls of Doom” to the stage for three performances Nov. 13-15.
The production centers on Fortuna, a crime-fighting superhero who can stretch time. After clearing her city of crime, she faces a new challenge when the Headmaster and his three villainous schoolgirls, Sandy, Candy and Mandy, arrive. Fortuna and her nerdy sidekick Joe must work to stop them.
Written and composed by Jason Powell, the show mixes comic-book action and over-the-top humor with a score drawing from opera, Broadway, Hollywood soundtracks, Gilbert and Sullivan, and soft 1980s pop.
Nashville Opera Artistic Director John Hoomes is directing the production, which builds on earlier versions staged by Milwaukee Opera Theatre in 2012 and 2014. While those productions used minimal staging and piano accompaniment, Nashville Opera has developed a larger musical and visual presentation.
Nashville musician Stephen Kummer created a new orchestration and will conduct. The cast includes Nashville-based singers Sarah Antell, Ivy Calvert, Sara Crigger and Greg Sliskovich.
The production received funding through OPERA America’s Next Stage Grants, which support contemporary opera and creative approaches to staging and musical collaboration.
The show will be performed at The Studio Theater at the Noah Liff Opera Center, an intimate venue with about 270 seats. Some audience members will sit just six feet from the performers. The production is recommended for ages 10 and older.
Performances are Friday, Nov. 13, and Saturday, Nov. 14, at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, Nov. 15, at 3 p.m.
