Final Fantasy Resonance on the game’s origins, had resistance from Square Enix execs who wanted a simple port

Final Fantasy Resonance producer Keisuke Nakashima has spoken about the game’s origins and development, including how Square Enix originally had a much different idea in mind for the project.

Final Fantasy Resonance is based on the bones of the mobile title Final Fantasy Brave Exvius. However, it has changed and expanded in different ways, such as incorporating the HD-2D art style.

Nakashima put together a pitch at the end of 2020 about fleshing out Brave Exvius for a proper turn-based RPG on consoles – and without the mobile gacha mechanics. However, as relayed by Bloomberg, “initially there was some resistance to the idea from Square Enix executives.” They were more interested in a simple port, which would be cheaper and wouldn’t require as long of a development cycle.

That didn’t sit right with Nakashima. He said the following in the interview:

“I didn’t want to go down that route. I wanted to create an original version for consoles that was a full-blown gameplay experience.”

Nakashima also mentioned that he was on a global press tour for Brave Exvius and met a bunch of people who had some interest in the title, but weren’t keen on the gambling mechanics. That feedback also help led to Final Fantasy Resonance.

“It was really disappointing to hear people didn’t want to play it just because of the gacha elements. That was another reason we wanted to make this a console game, to bring it to a wider audience.”

The game is out now worldwide on Nintendo Switch 2 and Switch. We previously posted our Final Fantasy Resonance review.
