Days After the $50 Million Mickey Mantle Rumor, Collectibles Millionaire Geoff Wilson Claims It Needs to Go for Much Higher

Discourse over how much the 1952 PSA 10 Mickey Mantle is worth at auction continues to ravage the collectibles space.

A recent claim by millionaire Patrick Bet-David is what catalyzed conversations about the same. On his podcast, he stated that he was involved in a private sale for a PSA 10 Mantle card that went for a whopping $50 million.

“Trust me, I know. I was involved. I was one of the five buyers that were looking at this card,” said PBD after saying he cannot reveal to the public who bought the card.

This clip went viral on X, prompting Goldin’s very own Ken Goldin to give his two cents. According to him, this sale never happened.

“That is false news. An aggressive rumor that is not true; I can state that with 100% fact. A 1952 mantle has NOT sold for $50 million,” said Goldin.

With rumors being brought forth to the public eye and immediately being debunked, it’s difficult to trace the actual worth of a collectible with such prestige.

Luckily for sports card enthusiasts, collectibles aficionado Geoff Wilson has a ballpark figure in mind.

Geoff Wilson on How Much the PSA 10 Mickey Mantle Should Be Worth

Wilson did not comment on Bet-David’s claim, but he did legitimize the Mantle card’s worth by saying, “I’ve said that this is a $50 million card for the last couple of years.”

He would take it a step further, however, and say, “My take on it is $50 million is too low.”

According to Wilson, if this card fetched upwards of $100 million at a public auction, he wouldn’t be surprised.

Cards in this space are valued based on a variety of factors: their history, scarcity, and condition.

This Mantle card, while not Mickey’s true rookie card, as that one is from the 1951 Bowman set, is one that came in a Topps set that revolutionized sports trading cards.

This set brought full-color photography to the front of the card, an athlete’s signature, and player stats to the back.

Not to mention that it came out during the season when Mantle carried the Yankees to a World Series win against the Dodgers with two home runs in the series and decisive runs in Game 7.

Given that this supposed $100 million card is also a PSA 10, meaning it is in pristine condition, and that there are only three known to exist, has driven up the price in collectors’ minds.

It is a massive step-up for a Mantle. The most expensive one went for $12.6 million at Heritage Auctions in August 2022 while being rated a SGC Mint +9.5.

If a PSA 10 1952 Mickey Mantle indeed goes for $100 million, it would lead to an influx of cash into the sports trading card collectibles space that fans have never witnessed in the history of this hobby.
