A Steven Spielberg and Michael Bay project just made a major pivot. The long-delayed adaptation of Robopocalypse is finally moving forward with some big names attached.
Robopocalypse TV show rumored to be in works
Daniel H. Wilson’s sci-fi novel Robopocalypse is now heading to the small screen as a TV series. Ron Howard and Akiva Goldsman are involved with the upcoming adaptation, as first reported by scooper @MyTimeToShineH. The project spent years in development hell as a feature film before pivoting to television.
Variety reported in 2018 that Michael Bay was in talks to direct the movie. He planned to reunite with Steven Spielberg, who had handpicked him to helm the Transformers franchise. The story is set after a robot uprising and follows humanity’s fight for survival.
Spielberg originally intended to direct the film himself. However, scheduling conflicts forced him to keep pushing the project back. He then looked to pass the reins to Bay, given their successful collaboration on Transformers.
The film version never made it out of development despite the involvement of two of Hollywood’s biggest directors. Spielberg had always expressed fascination with theent also failed to push the project into production
MyTimeToShineH noted that the story was originally planned as “an epic Michael Bay and then Steven Spielberg movie.” The post confirmed that Howard and Goldsman are now steering the project as a television series.
The shift from film to TV follows a broader industry trend of adapting ambitious properties for streaming platforms. Wilson’s novel provides enough material to sustain a serialized format. No network or platform has been officially announced for the series yet.
