Ken Kutaragi, often called the “father of PlayStation,” has shared new details about PlayStation’s early days, explaining that he never wanted to take revenge on Nintendo.
Kutaragi explained that he never planned to create PlayStation to compete with Nintendo, even after the two companies ended their partnership.
For those who don’t know, Kutaragi helped develop the sound chip for the Super Nintendo (SNES) and later worked on a CD-ROM add-on for the console, known as the Play Station. However, the project was eventually canceled.
Ken Kutaragi Says PlayStation Was Never About Revenge Against Nintendo
Nintendo initially partnered with Sony, but later changed its plans and decided to work with Philips on the SNES CD-ROM accessory instead. According to Kutaragi, this was a “bad shock” at the time.
Speaking to GamesIndustry , he explained that he had built the prototype for Nintendo as a subsystem and never expected it to become the starting point of what is now the PlayStation brand
There was more to the story which was revealed a long time ago, including how Nintendo’s president at the time, Hiroshi Yamauchi, secretly canceled the company’s plans with Sony. Yamauchi reportedly believed that Nintendo would be at a disadvantage under the agreement and that working with Philips would give the company more control.
After the initial shock, Kutaragi began to see the situation differently. He eventually considered it a positive development, as Sony was now free to follow its own plans. Following these disagreements with Nintendo, Kutaragi went on to lead Sony toward the creation of PlayStation. Although many people believe this was an act of revenge, he does not see it that way.
Kutaragi rejected the idea that he had decided to take revenge after Nintendo ended its partnership with Sony. He explained that although he was deeply shocked by what happened, he never believed Sony needed to defeat Nintendo.
“The story says I was super shocked and decided to take revenge, but I never thought about that … I didn’t think that we had to crush [Nintendo],” he said.
Although Ken Kutaragi insists that he never created PlayStation with revenge against Nintendo in mind, it is clear that many people will continue to see the story differently.
