The Kabir-Lalon Philosophical Music Festival concluded in Sreemangal upazila of Moulvibazar on Friday night, with speakers calling for greater efforts to familiarise the younger generation with the philosophies and teachings of Kabir and Lalon Shah.
Speaking at the concluding ceremony at the Zila Parishad Multipurpose Auditorium, educationist, author and researcher Professor Nripendra Lal Das said a concerted cultural initiative was needed to reconnect young people with their heritage and historical roots.
He said the festival was a positive step towards promoting cultural awareness and preserving the philosophical traditions of the subcontinent.
Das, who inaugurated the event by lighting a ceremonial lamp, also called for the festival to be organised regularly every year.
Organised by Lalon Bishwashangha with support from the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, the festival began on September 11 at the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in Dhaka. It subsequently travelled through all eight divisions before concluding in Sreemangal.
The concluding ceremony was dedicated to Sufi Sadar Uddin Ahmad Chishti, author of “Akhanda Quran Darshan”.
Mujibur Rahman Chowdhury, lawmaker from Moulvibazar-4, attended the programme as chief guest, while Aniruddha Das, assistant high commissioner of India in Sylhet, was present as special guest.
Abdel Mannan, chief executive of Lalon Bishwashangha and a researcher of Kabir and Lalon’s works, chaired the event.
In his speech, Mujibur Rahman Chowdhury said the festival had added a new dimension to Sreemangal’s cultural landscape, which already hosts various tourism-related and cultural events.
Aniruddha Das said the universal messages conveyed by great spiritual figures transcend geographical and temporal boundaries.
The concluding session, held from 6pm to 10pm, featured performances of songs by Kabir and Lalon by artists of the Kabir-Lalon Musical Mission, who travelled from Dhaka.
Artists from the Kabir-panthi and Ravidas-panthi communities, many of whom work in tea gardens across the greater Sylhet region, also performed traditional songs and dances, bringing the four-hour concluding programme to a close.
