AIPT’s 31 Days of Halloween is back! After a four-year absence, we’re celebrating the spooky season with a new article every day throughout October. Follow along as the AIPT staff explores horror across comics, movies, games, music, and more, with plenty of monsters, scares, and Halloween favorites along the way. Check back every day for something new, all the way through October 31.
Happy Halloween, comic book fans! This week, we’re getting into the spooky spirit with two creators who know a thing or two about making readers uncomfortable: Patrick Horvath, the mind behind Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees, and Tyler Crook, the acclaimed artist of Harrow County and Out of Alcatraz.
The two are teaming up for Archie in Hell, a new horror series from Oni Press that takes Riverdale’s favorite redhead and throws him into a nightmare of ancient gods, occult conspiracies, and even a trip back to Puritan America in 1690.
We dig into why Archie is the perfect target for cosmic horror, how the creative team balances Riverdale’s wholesome charm with seriously disturbing imagery, and why Tyler initially turned down the project. We also get into their creative process, the book’s surprising influences, and how far they’re allowed to push the gore in an Archie comic.
Plus, since it’s Halloween, we talk favorite horror traditions, spooky movies, and which Riverdale characters would survive a night in a haunted house.
But first, we’ve got a week’s worth of comics news to unpack and some new comics to review. So grab your candy, turn down the lights, and let’s get into it!
