Helluva Boss Just Quietly Revealed The Truth About One Of Its Villains, And He’s A Far Worse Threat Than Anyone Guessed

Helluva Boss is hardly a show with a shortage of villains. Set in Hell, where the baseline for social interaction is well within what we mortals would consider to be criminal, deviant, and all-around unacceptable, even the show’s protagonists— a team of contract killers— leave trails of punches, gunshots, gratuitous gore, dead bodies, and questionable fluids in their wake. As for whoHelluva Bossactually considers to be the bad guys, the rogues’ gallery runs the gamut from spouse-killing mob bosses to vengeful exes to the very rulers of Hell’s rings. However, in the most recentHelluva Boss episode— Season 2 episode 5, “The Auction” — a previously unremarkably cringeworthy antagonist revealed his true nature as the most cunning, powerful and malicious threat that I.M.P and their allies have ever encountered.

Having long hovered in the background of the show’s divorce subplot around the Goetia demon Stolas and his bitter and controlling wife Stella, this malevolent strategist has spent the past season building his master plan in plain sight— a careful rewatch of earlier seasons shows his machinations clearly. Now the trap has sprung shut, both figuratively and literally, with Stolas’ seventeen-year-old daughter Octa

Stella’s Brother Andrealphus Has Been Setting Up Chess Pieces Since the Beginning of the Second Season

Andrealphus— a Goetia demon with ice powers and brother to Stolas’ estranged wife Stella— was first mentioned in Season 2 episode 1 “The Circus” as Stella exploded at Stolas over his desire to divorce her. She citied her brother among the Goetia that would cast judgement on them for their separation, and Stolas’ response shows that he is also aware of his then-brother-in-law, referring to him as “arrogant”— a description that proves accurate in Andrealphus’ first in-person appearance three episodes later. Serving as some sort of mediator or advisor for Stella and Stolas’ divorce, Andrealphus is consistently demeaning and sarcastic to both parties, insulting and vilifying Stolas for his treatment of Stella while simultaneously talking down to his sister and treating her as an incapable child.

This meeting would also mark the first of many instances where Andrealphus’ comments towards Stella cross the line from awkward to inappropriate— however, in a show as gratuitously edgy as Helluva Boss, the darker implications of this initially flew under fans’ radar. When the meeting is interrupted by an assassin and Andrealphus learns that Stella wants to have Stolas killed, it becomes clear that the icy Goetia has far more influence in this affair than simply supporting Stella’s wishes. Andrealphus questions if Stella is aware that Stolas’ death will mean that all of his wealth passes instantly to their daughter Octavia. When Stella seems unconcerned by that fact, something truly unsettling occurs— circling his sister like she’s prey and stroking her face with his hand until she winces in fear, Andrealphus orders the normally proud, and stubborn, and fiery Stella to call off the assassination and she yields to his demands with only a petulant whine of protest.

While this the first hint that the audience got of Andrealphus’ greater designs for Stella, Stolas, and Octavia, but due to his seemingly friendly rapport with Stella, he was largely written off for the intervening as an extension of her villainy, with his role as Stella’s cunning divorce strategist balanced out by goofily-animated facial expressions and what seemed at the time to be a running joke about his creepy attraction to his sister. However, Andrealphus would soon make a massive grab for power— although still seemingly acting in accordance with Stella’s will— in Helluva Boss Season 2’s penultimate episode, “Mastermind”. After learning from Stella that Stolas had loaned Blitzo his magical Grimoire for illegal purposes, Andrealphus brought the matter to the attention of the authorities and Blitzo and his friends soon found themselves hauled before the judgement of Satan Himself. Here, Andrealphus accused Blitzo of assaulting and manipulating Stolas to gain possession of the Grimoire, as well as falsely pinning the hired assassin on him— charges that Blitzo could not easily refute, and that left the Imp sentenced to certain death.

Stolas’ feelings towards Blitzo had deepened since their initial encounter and he could not leave the Imp to die, any more than he could let Andrealphus’ lies go unchallenged. Seconds before the executioner’s blade swings down on Blitzo’s neck, Stolas storms into Satan’s court and declares himself to be the true mastermind behind Blitzo’s illegal activities. While for Stolas, this act of honesty and self-sacrifice was a great moment of personal agency and liberation, observation of Andrealphus’ facial expressions during this scene shows that Stolas’ feelings could not be further from the truth— the ice demon had planned every step of this trial in advance, manipulating Stolas into confessing to a serious crime.

Once he’d gotten the confession he needed, Andrealphus sprang into action, humbly suggesting to Satan that Stolas be punished by banishment— specifically, by loss of his powers, rulerships, title, and home. With that, Andrealphus gained control of Stolas’ estate, and while he took some time to celebrate alongside Stella, any illusion of equality between the two soon came to an abrupt and merciless end. Stolas’ palace was overrun by Andrealphus’ ice, trapped in a state of perpetual winter. Inside, the normally loud and domineering Stella was nowhere to be seen, while Octavia had been forbidden from leaving the palace grounds.

As of “The Auction”, we know that Andrealphus is emptying out the palace, selling all of both Stolas’ and Stella’s possessions— some of which made up Octavia’s planned inheritance— with no regard for his sister’s protests. While he claims that the funds from these sales will go back to Stella, his current treatment of her suggests that access to this wealth will come with some severe strings attached. The fact that he is specifically rushing to liquidate the estate’s contents before Octavia can come of age and inherit it speaks to the fact that Andrealphus’ goal is not revenge against Stolas, nor is it money— he wants total control over Stella, and, if he can get it, over Octavia as well.

Flashbacks and Subtle Cues Hint at Andrealphus’ Long History of Coercion and Control Over Stella

The idea that the true aim of Andrealphus’ schemes is gain have full control over the lives and rights of Stella and her daughter only becomes more disturbing— even for a normally-fairly-messed-up show like Helluva Boss— as “The Auction” progresses to a flashback scene, where we see the pair in their youth shortly after Stella and Stolas’ betrothal becomes official. Here, Andrealphus’ attempts to support Stella in her engagement are thwarted by his own clear jealously, a fact which, coupled with the same creepy behavior from Andrealphus and visible discomfort from Stella seen in their later years, serves to further cement the nefarious nature of the ice Goetia’s desires regarding his sister.

Viewed in this context, scenes of the pair together in earlier seasons appear vastly different. Upon closer rewatch, while Stella and Andrealphus do trade insults incessantly, Andrealphus’ insults aren’t really insults— when he isn’t casting genuine doubt on his sister’s intelligence and mental capacity, he’s making the sort of comments about Stella would be cause for concern in any sibling relationship, even physically approaching, touching, and grabbing at Stella in ways that make her visibly flinch away.

While “Western Energy” and “The Auction” are the most blatant depiction of Andrealphus’ creepy behavior so far, a rewatch of his prior appearances reveals the unsettling truth that almost all of his and Stella’s interactions over the course of the series have contained at least one of these moments— a strange comment, an unwanted touch, Stella flinching or squeezing her eyes shut as he nears her. In fact, rewatching with a close eye on Stella, her first reaction to many of Andrealphus’ plans for Stolas— which, notably, usually go against her own wishes for how to handle the situation— is actually a flicker of something like fear, quickly buried under bratty, immature comebacks that, with the context we now have, increasingly seem more like a well-practiced performance.

The truth of Stella’s feelings about her brother even come through in the aforementioned balcony scene from “The Circus”— as she raises the topic of his potential reactions to Stolas leaving her, Stella’s voice audibly breaks, and when Stolas chooses that moment to shut down her protests, she is not fully able to hide her shock and fear. In fact, despite her lack of any love for Stolas, it seems like she’s about to cry— this reaction, coupled with what we’ve since learned, should illustrate how truly vile a threat Andrealphus is to Stolas and Stella’s family.

Andrealphus’ Menace May Even Reach Past the Goetia Arc to Collide With one of Helluva Boss’ Other Approaching Conflicts

With both Andrealphus’ true role in Stella’s past and his designs for (and absolute control over) her and Octavia’s futures increasingly revealed, it is clear that the ice Goetia will be one of Helluva Boss Season 3’s biggest villains and may even be the worst threat— in terms of unrestrained power, malice, and twistedness— that Blitzo and his friends have faced yet. However, the threat Andrealphus poses to Octavia may not be even be the only reason that Blitzo, Stolas, and the rest of I.M.P— the contract-killing agency that Blitzo initially operated through use of Stolas’ grimoire— are approaching an inevitable and brutal confrontation with Stolas’ utterly awful ex-brother-in-law.

In the Season 1 episode “Harvest Moon”, we learn that Stolas has an annual obligation to visit the agriculturally-focused Wrath Ring, where he uses his power of his Grimoire to open a portal to Earth’s skies and “curse” (seemingly the hellish equivalent of blessing) Wrath’s harvest with the light of Earth’s moon. While we don’t currently know exactly what effect the Harvest Moon has on Wrath’s agricultural output, it is important enough to warrant a fairly major holiday and commemorative games within the ring. With the Grimoire now in the very inexperienced hands of Octavia and Stolas’ royal duties being handled by Andrealphus— who, even aside from his loud and obvious disrespect for imps and other lower demons, is notably ice-themed— it seems worrisomely likely that the true light of Earth’s Harvest Moon will not be cursing Wrath’s crops this year, or any year in the near future.

Several plot elements in Helluva Boss‘ third season have seemingly been setting the stage for a major, conflict-heavy, high-stakes arc to unfold in Wrath, likely during the season’s second half premiering in 2027— Millie’s initial uncertainty around her pregnancy led her home to her family, the Haymurders, in the Wrath Ring. There, she re-established her ties to her community and remembered how important her home is to her. Only two episodes later, it was implied that Wally Wackford of Wrath’s prodigious farm-equipment-and-weapons-manufacturing Wackford Family may soon be working alongside I.M.P as a publicist, thus giving I.M.P yet another strong tie to Hell’s agricultural ring. Meanwhile,Helluva Boss‘ growing focus on themes of class, wealth inequality, and simmering desire for systemic change would make a food shortage a sensible, and poignant, direction to take the plot. The effects of Andrealphus’ coup (and, by extent, the choices made by Stolas that left his title so vulnerable to usurpation) may soon be hitting I.M.P through more than just their ties to Stolas— if Andrealphus’ power-grabbing is not put to an end, the Wackfords and Haymurders could be feeling the chill of an early frost very soon.

With his growing menace across nearly every single one of Helluva Boss‘ current plot arcs, well-proven ability to manipulate characters behind the scenes, and truly disturbing goals of full dependence (and likely much worse) for Stella and Octavia, Andrealphus has quickly gone from an obnoxious accomplice villain to the biggest threat in the series. Only time and new episodes will tell how far, and how quickly, this evil ice-devil will choose to expand his nefarious schemes and frigid magic, but one thing’s for certain: we underestimated him.
