Can A Mini PC Replace A Gaming Desktop? It’s Complicated

Traditionally, people buy mini PCs because they are efficient, compact, and sometimes cheaper than a budget desktop. As such, mini PCs make good everyday workstations, but the same doesn’t always apply to entertainment, particularly gaming. This is because of how they are designed and model availability.

Most affordable options lack a discrete graphics card, which can hurt performance. But remember, gaming isn’t a one-size-fits-all hobby; you can play lighter titles that don’t require high-end hardware, and you can always use cloud gaming if your network supports it. Lastly, even if the mini PC lacks a discrete graphics card, some models support eGPUs.

Whether a mini PC can replace a gaming desktop depends on what you use it for and what kind of gamer you are. If you’re a casual gamer who enjoys less demanding games, yeah, a mini PC can replace a gaming desktop. Plus, not all mini PCs are made the same; a sub-$1,000 mini PC won’t replace your $2,000 gaming desktop. At a similar price point, a desktop gaming PC should support a dedicated, large cooling system, which is important for heat management.

When a mini PC can’t replace a desktop for gaming

As discussed above, a mini PC can be handy if you’re subscribed to Nvidia GeForce Now and PC Game Pass — or any preferred cloud gaming service. When it comes to hardware, cloud services do the heavy lifting: remote computers in the data center handle the processing, then send the results to the user’s computer. The caveat is that it relies on your network connection because the request (the game) is streamed remotely.

For example, Nvidia GeForce Now recommends at least 15 Mbps, but specifies 25 Mbps for 1080p/60, 45 Mbps for 4K/120, and 65 Mbps for 5K/120. The support section also recommends wired Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Then, the other issue is that you will likely want to pay for a subscription — plus, you can’t play anything offline. Still, this isn’t perfect. For reliability alone, cloud gaming can’t replace the games you own from Steam or a similar storefront.

Upgrading a mini PC is also questionable. It works like a laptop: many parts, like the CPU, are soldered in, so you can’t replace them to improve performance, and even when you can, the upgrade options are more limited. It isn’t impossible depending on what mini PC you buy, but it does add more friction. However, it isn’t that big of a deal if you’re playing games more casually. Still, it gets a bit more iffy for a seasoned gamer who may want to optimize their setup to handle more demanding titles consistently.

A mid-range mini PC can definitely handle less demanding games, especially at 1080p or sometimes 1440p, which is enough resolution for most people. Even if the performance doesn’t feel consistent, you can tune it down or cap the frames via in-game settings. Some integrated GPUs can also be quite formidable because of the built-in APU. So even if you can’t achieve the raw performance you want, you can rely on AMD or Nvidia’s AI upscaling technology to bridge the gap between your own hardware and the demands of the software.

For example, “Baldur’s Gate 3” is technically playable on a Radeon 780M iGPU, but performance varies with graphics settings. At 4K with maxed-out graphics, expect around 36 FPS, but dropping to 1080p can get you to 60 FPS; this is mostly possible with FSR enabled, which does a lot of heavy lifting, along with optimizing in-game settings. At the end of the day, it still varies case-by-case for the games you play. Remember, not all support RTX and FSR optimizations.

That means the biggest hurdle becomes hardware, just like on a desktop or a laptop. One particular hurdle is available RAM, since some models come with only 16 GB, which is already too little for AAA games. To be comfortable, you’ll want to have 32 GB of RAM (DDR5) for a moderate performance boost and flexibility. For great mini PCs that handle AAA gaming well, look at the Asus ROG NUC. Unfortunately, they’re pricey, often over $2,000. Alternatively, Minisforum offers the capable AtomMan series, all equipped with higher-end Intel and AMD chips and a top-tier Nvidia GPU.
