AMD FSR Diamond Combines Multi-Frame Generation and Ray Reconstruction

AMD FSR Diamond introduces AI upscaling, multi-frame generation, and ray reconstruction for Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox Project Helix gaming platform.

AMD’s FSR technology is expanding across current and next-generation gaming hardware. FSR 4.1 is coming to RDNA 2-powered devices, including the Xbox Series X and Series S, while Microsoft’s next-generation Project Helix is expected to use a new version of AMD’s FSR package called FSR Diamond.

While FSR 4.1 gives current Xbox Series S and Series X consoles a visual upgrade, FSR Diamond is an entirely new technology built from the ground up for Microsoft’s next-generation ecosystem and AMD’s next-generation GPUs. Microsoft has confirmed that Project Helix is its next-generation platform. Co-engineered with AMD, Helix doesn’t rely solely on GPU hardware.

FSR Diamond Is Designed for Project Helix

While current-generation Xbox Series S and Series X hardware relies on a retrofitted FSR 4.1 implementation, FSR Diamond is being tailored specifically for the hardware architecture arriving with Project Helix. So, what makes FSR Diamond different from standard upscaling? It contains three technologies: a machine-learning-based upscaler, machine-learning-based multi-frame generation, and machine-learning-based ray reconstruction.

First, let’s talk about hardware-accelerated machine learning reconstruction. Unlike legacy FSR, which uses a partial algorithm, FSR Diamond uses dedicated matrix hardware on the system-on-chip to take low internal resolutions, such as 1080p, and reconstruct clean, native-looking 4K without shimmering or temporal ghosting.

This approach lets the technology reconstruct images using dedicated hardware designed for machine learning workloads. With Project Helix, AMD and Microsoft are targeting an architecture built to handle these tasks directly. The second technology is multi-frame generation. Instead of generating just a single interpolated frame, FSR Diamond’s model can predict multiple synthetic frames in real time.

That means turning a 40fps base render into a 120fps output. For you, this could mean smoother gameplay without requiring the GPU to render every frame from scratch. However, the experience will depend on the implementation, base rendering performance, and latency management. Frame generation increases displayed frame rates, but underlying rendering performance still matters.

Ray Reconstruction Could Change Next-Generation Graphics

The third technology is ray reconstruction. Path-traced lighting normally produces noisy reflections on consoles. FSR Diamond uses AI denoising during rendering, giving Project Helix the potential to support full path tracing at playable frame rates. And we think ray reconstruction is going to be the technology that makes the biggest difference.

When it comes to graphics, geometry, texture resolution, and 4K resolutions, we are already at a point where lighting improvements can make a difference to the overall image. Current-generation games lack better lighting. So, if next-generation consoles deliver full path tracing alongside ray reconstruction, that will be a major shift for gaming.

With AI denoising handling the rendering process, developers could have more options for implementing lighting effects without relying entirely on traditional rendering techniques. The results will depend on the final hardware, software implementation, and performance targets.

Where does this leave Xbox in the broader hardware race?

Nvidia laid the groundwork with DLSS 3.5 and later versions, while Sony introduced PSSR for its ecosystem. By integrating FSR Diamond directly into Project Helix’s custom silicon from day one, Microsoft aims to reduce the trade-offs developers face between resolution, frame rate, and complex lighting.

Machine learning can handle upscaling, allowing the GPU to focus on world simulation and gameplay. Multi-frame generation could also help increase displayed frame rates, while ray reconstruction could support more demanding lighting techniques.

For developers, integrating these technologies into the platform’s hardware and software could provide another way to balance image quality and performance. However, the actual results will depend on how FSR Diamond compares with competing solutions once the systems and games become available.
