Oliver teen with health battle one step closer to becoming comic book superhero
A superhero in the making
An in-hospital Oliver teen is closer to becoming a comic book superhero like his idol Spider-Man with a few more competition voting rounds to conquer.
Taylor Giroux, 16, was born three months premature and diagnosed with short bowel syndrome and later liver disease, which has caused him to be in and out of Vancouver’s BC Children’s Hospital consistently over the course of his life.
He has remained back in hospital with some unclear medical conditions since Sept. 25. After recently finishing a round of antibiotics for an infection, Taylor has been battling a fever with few answers as to what is going on now.
“He is a real trouper through it all and continues to improve despite fighting this mystery infection,” says mom Natasha Giroux.
“Winning the Stan Lee Super kid competition would make a great end to the terrible year he has endured. That and his dream of becoming a real superhero in a comic book even though regardless of the outcome he will always be a superhero in my eyes.”
As of Thursday, Taylor Giroux is in the preliminary group finals of Stan Lee Foundation’s Super Kid challenge. But he needs to come in first place on Thursday at 7 p.m. to move on to the next round. Then, Taylor will have to make it through individual quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals. Voting ends on Nov. 19.
The reigning champion will have their story transformed into a Stan Lee Universe comic book. The winner also will receive $25,000 and VIP tickets to the 2027 Los Angeles Comic Con.
Teachers and students at Southern Okanagan Secondary School in Oliver have been voting for the 16-year-old in hopes of making his comic dreams come true. Taylor is a huge Spider-Man and Stan Lee fan and has been since he was three years old.
“We are rallying the super squad and asking for as many people to share and vote as possible,” Natasha says.
“It has been fun to be a part of [this] and seeing everyone rally together to try and make this happen for him has been absolutely amazing and we are extremely grateful for all the support. It truly means the world to us.”
