First released in 1999, the anime “One Piece” has surpassed 1,180 episodes, continuing to expand with film projects, live-action movies, and remakes.

On October 20, 1999, the first episode of One Piece aired on Japanese television, bringing the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates from the manga to the big screen. After 27 years, the series is still ongoing and has become one of the most enduring anime franchises.
According to ComicBook , despite numerous changes in animation technology, storytelling, and release schedules, One Piece maintains a prominent position in the anime industry. Furthermore, the producers’ new plans suggest the franchise has the potential to continue thriving for many years to come.
The anime is adapted from the manga of the same name by Eiichiro Oda, which began serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump on July 22, 1997. The story revolves around Luffy, a young man who possesses a body capable of stretching like rubber after eating a Devil Fruit. Luffy and his friends embark on a journey to find the legendary treasure One Piece, with the dream of becoming the Pirate King.
Initially, Oda intended to conclude the story within about five years. However, the pirate world has expanded significantly, with hundreds of characters, new seas, and many unsolved mysteries. From an adventure series aimed at teenagers, One Piece has gradually become a popular culture phenomenon with a global fanbase.
According to Oricon News, by 2026, the One Piece manga will have surpassed 600 million copies sold globally. This achievement demonstrates the enduring appeal of the original work after nearly three decades of publication.
Major changes after nearly three decades
For most of its broadcast history, One Piece maintained a weekly episode release schedule, with the exception of occasional interruptions. This schedule ensured the anime’s consistent television presence, but also presented challenges as the storyline increasingly aligned with the manga’s plot.
In 2025, Toei Animation announced a change in its production and release model starting in 2026. Instead of airing almost year-round, the anime will switch to a two-run model, with approximately 26 new episodes each year. Producer Ryuta Koike explained that the decision was aimed at adjusting the narrative pace, allowing the anime to better reflect the content and rhythm of the manga. The reduction in the number of episodes reflects a shift in the development strategy of a franchise that has existed for over 25 years.

In 2026, One Piece returns in April with the Elbaph arc, taking the Straw Hat Pirates to the legendary land of giants. This is one of the locations that has been mentioned for a long time in the story, associated with many important mysteries of the One Piece world.
On September 27th, episode 1180 aired in Japan, concluding the anime release for the year. The producers confirmed that subsequent episodes will be released in 2027, but have not yet announced a specific date.
ComicBook argues that the new model hasn’t fully addressed the adaptation pacing issue. According to the article, anime still only adapts about 2-3 manga chapters per episode, meaning the time to reach the conclusion could be even longer than before. However, the change in release schedule suggests Toei Animation is preparing for the long haul rather than trying to quickly finish the series.
Many new projects in 2027
Even though the TV anime is on hiatus until next year, One Piece continues to expand through new projects. Notably, two theatrical anime films have been announced, along with a complete anime remake.
According to Oricon News , Toei Animation has confirmed that One Piece Film: God Valley will be released in Japan in the summer of 2027, coinciding with the manga’s 30th anniversary. The film will explore the events of God Valley, one of the most significant incidents in the history of the pirate world created by Eiichiro Oda.
The next film project, One Piece Film: BAAD , is scheduled for release in 2029, coinciding with the anime’s 30th anniversary. Both projects were announced at the One Piece Day event in August.
Meanwhile, Netflix is preparing to release The One Piece , a new anime adaptation produced by WIT Studio. Unlike the original Toei Animation series, this project re-adapts the story from the early chapters, using modern animation technology and a restructured storytelling approach.
According to Netflix, the first season will consist of 7 episodes, totaling approximately 300 minutes, adapting about 50 chapters of the first manga and ending with Luffy meeting Sanji at the Baratie floating restaurant. The entire season is expected to premiere in February 2027.
Producing a new version while the original anime continues is a noteworthy move. With over 1,000 episodes, the current television series might be daunting for new viewers. The One Piece offers an alternative approach to the story from the beginning, while long-time fans can continue their journey with the familiar version.
Besides the anime, One Piece is also being developed into a live-action series by Netflix. After two seasons, the third season, titled One Piece: The Battle of Alabasta, is scheduled to air in 2027, continuing the Straw Hat Pirates’ journey in the desert kingdom of Alabasta.
The simultaneous presence of the original anime, anime remakes, movies, and live-action films shows that One Piece is evolving into a multi-platform entertainment brand, rather than relying solely on a decades-long television series.
After 27 years, Luffy’s story is far from over. The original anime is entering a new broadcast phase, the manga continues to expand on the final mysteries, while adaptations create further opportunities to bring the world of One Piece to new generations of viewers.
