AMD Radeon GPUs Get DLSS 5, Multi Frame Generation and Ray Reconstruction

AMD Radeon GPUs gain access to DLSS 5, DLSS 4.5, multi frame generation, and ray reconstruction through modding.

AMD Radeon GPUs may soon gain access to NVIDIA’s DLSS technologies through community-developed modifications. Modders have expanded support for DLSS features, including neural rendering, upscaling, frame generation, and ray reconstruction. At the same time, NVIDIA’s latest DLSS 5 model is showing performance gains in unsupported games, while questions remain about the availability of the RTX 5090 and NVIDIA’s plans for its GeForce lineup.

Modders have now gotten almost every major DLSS technology running on AMD Radeon GPUs. This includes DLSS 5, DLSS 4.5, Multi Frame Generation, and Ray Reconstruction. According to VideoCardz, developer Daniel Blanco has released version 0.8.0 of a project called DLSSNR on AMD.

DLSSNR on AMD Brings NVIDIA’s DLSS Features to Radeon GPUs

The project started to run NVIDIA’s DLSS 5 neural rendering technology on Radeon GPUs. Still, it has now expanded to include nearly the entire DLSS feature set. DLSS is one of NVIDIA’s main selling points. Think of it like iMessage on iPhone or Zelda on Nintendo. These are proprietary software features that help sell hardware.

And speaking of selling hardware, subscribing to Gamer doesn’t require an $8,000 GPU. It’s completely free, so you can hit the subscribe button and bell icon to stay up to date on PC hardware. What’s interesting is that this modification doesn’t trick a game into recognizing an AMD GPU as an NVIDIA card.

It doesn’t even use a translation layer like ZLUDA. Instead, it uses custom compute kernels designed to run NVIDIA’s neural networks on AMD hardware. The modification reportedly works well in some cases. One user demonstrated DLSS Ray Reconstruction running in Cyberpunk 2077 on an RX 9070 XT at 1440p with path tracing enabled. They reportedly saw virtually no performance loss after enabling Ray Reconstruction.

However, other users have reported performance drops, including one test showing an approximately 25% reduction. Your results could vary depending on the game, hardware, and configuration. The full feature set currently supports Radeon RX 7000 and RX 9000 series GPUs, while the RX 6000 series receives limited support. You’ll also need Windows 11, a compatible DirectX 12 game, and your own copies of NVIDIA’s DLL files.

Why would NVIDIA publicly reassure gamers about GeForce while continuing to focus on AI products?

The low starting performance in Forza Horizon 6 is partly explained by the RTX 4060. Even so, the reported improvements show how much performance can change with the newer model. We should acknowledge that these improvements are worth paying attention to. However, we also need to consider the performance cost of adding more rendering technologies to games.

GeForce has helped shape the company into what it is today, and its gaming customers remain an important part of that history. NVIDIA addressing the RTX 5090 situation could suggest it recognizes gamers’ concerns. It does not necessarily mean that demand for AI hardware is weakening, nor does it confirm that NVIDIA expects an AI market downturn.

Still, if NVIDIA has changed its production plans, the move could indicate that the company is reassessing how it balances gaming and AI demand. For now, buyers will need to wait for clearer evidence that RTX 5090 availability is improving.
