Final Fantasy Resonance is coming to both Nintendo Switch 2 and Switch, but some of you might be wondering what’s different between the two versions. Performance, resolution, loading times, and the handling of the physical release all come into play.
At the end of the day, the experience itself is exactly the same on both platforms. You’re not missing out on any content by purchasing one version over the other.
Technical differences
One big technical difference is that Final Fantasy Resonance will run better on Nintendo Switch 2, so you’re getting 60 frames per second compared to 30 FPS on Switch 1.
We don’t have exact numbers, but image quality is sharper on Nintendo Switch 2. This is because of what the two systems are capable of. Nintendo Switch itself maxes out at 1080p in docked mode and 720p in handheld mode. For Nintendo Switch 2, the system can go as high as 4K docked and 1080p in handheld mode. Initial reports indicate that the title doesn’t actually reach 4K on Nintendo Switch 2, but resolution is still higher than Switch 1. Nintendo’s latest console does have native resolution for UI elements, but sub-native resolution for gameplay.
Something else we’re hearing about is differences in load times. According to RPG Site, the dashboard to title screen takes 26 seconds when played on Nintendo Switch 1 vs. 11 seconds for Switch 2. That said, load times are pretty much identical if you’re playing the Nintendo Switch version on Switch 2
Load times comparison
RPG Site provides the following comparison:
| Platform | Dashboard to title screen | Loading a save |
| Switch 1 | 26 seconds | 5 seconds |
| Switch 2 | 11 seconds | 3-4 seconds |
| Switch 1 on Switch 2 | 10-11 seconds | 4 seconds |
Physical release: game-key card vs. full cartridge
One important aspect to consider is how Square Enix is handling the Final Fantasy Resonance Nintendo Switch 1 and Switch 2 physical release.
On Nintendo Switch 2, it’s a game-key card. In contrast, everything is on the cartridge for Nintendo Switch 1. With a game-key card, you’ll need to download all game data before the title can start. Collectors may therefore be more interested in the Nintendo Switch version.
Is there a Final Fantasy Resonance Switch 2 upgrade?
Unfortunately, there is no upgrade pack or upgrade path for Final Fantasy Resonance. If you choose to buy the RPG on Nintendo Switch and become interested in the Switch 2 version later, you’ll need to make a completely separate purchase.
Save data is also incompatible between the two versions. You can’t carry over save data from Nintendo Switch to Switch 2 and vice versa.
