Recently, there has been progress in finding a PS5 jailbreak for the latest 14.10 firmware. Homebrew developer Gezine has now shared a video showing access to the console’s debug settings. While dumping games still faces obstacles, the news reintroduces a piracy threat as the GTA 6 release date approaches.
Roadblocks remain
After Sony blocked exploits in the October 1st software update, Gezine claims to have overcome the security protections. That said, several reasons explain why supporters aren’t yet celebrating. The commonly used hypervisor bypass, which is key to creating and booting game backups, isn’t working.
Another issue is that the PS5 console jailbreak is private, and it’s unclear if the developer will upload the files. Doing so could attract Sony’s attention and prompt new firmware to counter the advancement. Some followers are already asking for a delay until the November 19th GTA 6 release date arrives.
The PlayStation homebrew scene has evolved rapidly in the last several months. It hit a milestone in late July when the Relapse exploit became compatible with the 13.60 software rollout. Previously, gamers had to search for much older hardware that hadn’t been updated. 14.00 and 14.10 thwarted hackers, but it appears the measures were only temporary.
The race to crack GTA 6
More attention has focused on the PS5 jailbreak because of Rockstar’s next title. A datamine of the PlayStation backend reportedly discovered that GTA 6 would require firmware 14.10 to run. That raised a dilemma for homebrew enthusiasts, since the latest software impeded Relapse and the Byepervisor Reborn bypass.
Although they may no longer have to compromise, a working backup of the crime epic is not guaranteed. Apps like the Overdrive store make it easier to find and boot games. Still, not all titles perform smoothly, and the Rockstar project is particularly demanding.
With piracy on the rise, both Sony and publishers may be monitoring Gezine’s efforts. Even if the hacker refuses to release the exploit, multiple developers are probing PS5 consoles for weaknesses.
