Netflix Adds A Sci-Fi Horror Series That Will Go Down As A Genre Classic

If a good show flies under the radar upon its initial release, there’s no better remedy than for it to be picked up by Netflix and presented to the streamer’s 325 million subscribers. It’s happened many times, and now yet another criminally underrated series is getting the Netflix stimulus package. “From” is the best sci-fi horror series you’re not watching, but thanks to the biggest streamer in the game, you can now fix that very easily. The show has been quietly building a following since its 2022 debut on Epix and throughout its subsequent run on MGM+. Now, it will hopefully garner the audience it deserves as the first three seasons became available to stream on Netflix as of October 19, 2026.

“From” is created by John Griffin, who otherwise wrote an episode of the now-canceled Jordan Peele-hosted “Twilight Zone” reboot and penned the screenplay for the 2023 Disney+ original movie “Crater,” which disappeared shortly after its debut on the streamer. “From,” then, is by far his most significant work, and has been extremely well received by both critics and the fans that actually managed to find it hiding away on MGM+.

The show is very much in the tradition of “Lost,” with a central mystery that, even after four seasons, remains unsolved. But there’s much more to the series than pandering to audiences who view TV shows merely as logical puzzles to be solvedtop-notch horror that also doesn’t sacrifice human drama in order to explore its sci-fi horror premise. Now, the show is finally getting the exposure it deserves

From is much more than just a horror version of Lost

Hannah Cheramy's Julie Matthews sits in front of a tapestry showing a town being menaced by creatures in From

The series premiere of “From” opens in a small, rundown town known only as the Township, where locals appear to be going about their business as usual. But as the sunlight begins to fade, Harold Perrineau’s Boyd Stevens appears, walking slowly through the streets and ringing his bell. A waitress at a diner rushes a couple out the door, touching a talisman by the exit as they leave and immediately giving us the sense this ain’t your average American small town.

Turns out, the inhabitants of the Township are trapped there and are essentially doing their best to survive until they can figure out a way to escape. But that’s not the only thing they have to worry about. This particular town is also menaced by horrifying entities who emerge from the surrounding forest at night and feed on those who dare let them get close enough.

Stevens has appointed himself sheriff of this beleaguered hamlet, and does his best to ensure the residents stay safe until they can find some way out of their nightmare scenario. Of course, Perrineau previously portrayed Michael Dawson on “Lost,” and while there are obvious parallels between the two shows, it seems the “From” writers are working from a more well-defined blueprint this time around. As Perrineau reveal to Variety, he had a discussion with the “From” writers ahead of agreeing to star and was clearly told, “We have a story to tell. We’re going to do it in 10 episode bursts. And this is the first season, this is what you’ll find out in the next season, and here’s how it’s going to go.” That means “From” shouldn’t conclude with the same kind of disappointing ending “Lost” ultimately delivered.

From has been a critical hit throughout its entire four-season run

“From” really should be better known than it is. Sure, it’s been running on niche streaming service, but the reviews have been stellar from the very beginning. The show has an average critic score of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, with Season 3 even managing a perfect 100%. Meanwhile, “From” even has Stephen King’s stamp of approval, though the master of horror sure does seem to like a lot of shows, including a horror series with a 32% Rotten Tomatoes score. Regardless, “From” has consistently delivered quality sci-fi horror for four seasons.

Reviewing the first season, Brad Newsome of the Sydney Morning Herald praised the horror for being “real gory.” Indeed, within the first two episodes, you’ll see a small child writhing in pain from a horrific injury in a sequence that immediately establishes the show’s no-holds-barred approach to the gore. But as Newsome goes on to note, “This is no simple splatterfest,” adding, “Series creator John Griffin has built his world meticulously, and all his characters have their own fraught backstories and their own personal demons.” Meanwhile, Brian Tallerico of RogerEbert.com found “From” to be “a smart, extremely watchable horror show” and even suggested the series would “likely become a big hit on a streaming giant but might get lost on Epix.” Well, now that Netflix has added the first three seasons, we’ll see how accurate Tallerico’s guess was.

Those interested will be glad to know there’s also a fourth season and MGM+ has already greenlit a fifth and final season. So, if you like what you see on Netflix, there’s plenty more “From” where that came, er, from.
