Broken Arrow boy competes to become a real-life superhero, honoring late father
BROKEN ARROW, Okla. — A seven-year-old Broken Arrow boy is hoping to have his story turned into a real-life superhero comic through the Stan Lee Super Kids competition, an opportunity that holds special meaning for him and his family.
Benny Johnson is competing in the online contest, which features children ages five to 17 with inspiring stories.
The overall champion will receive $25,000 and have their real-life story and personal qualities transformed into an original superhero identity by the Stan Lee Universe creative team.
For Benny’s mother, Mary Johnson, entering her son was about more than winning.
His later father, who died from brain cancer a few years ago, was a passionate comic book fan.
Mary said he collected comics and had superhero action figures around the house.
“His dad was actually the inspiration for me entering him into the competition,” Mary shared.
Mary said Benny’s father continued to spend time with their son even as he battled cancer.
“Even after he was sick and on his hospice bed, he always had Benny up there with him and watching TV together.”
Mary said she believes Benny’s father would be proud to see how far his son has advanced in the competition.
“He would just be over the moon about it. I think he would be in disbelief honestly that he has made it so far.”
Benny is currently among the top five contestants in his group.
Competitors advance through multiple rounds, with the winner of each group moving on to the quarterfinals, followed by the semifinals and finals.
Mary said she hopes the competition can help Benny build a future while keeping his father’s memory alive.
The family homeschools Benny and Mary said she keeps pictures of his father in their homeschool area so he remains a part of their everyday lives.
“His dad and I wanted to homeschool, so it’s important for me to continue doing that with him so that I can teach him everything and definitely make sure his dad stays in his memory.”
Benny’s favorite superhero is Spider-Man, while his father’s favorite was the Hulk.
The competition supports the Stan Lee Foundation, which promotes literacy and education.
Voting is free, with one free vote available every 24 hours.
Supporters can also donate money for additional votes with their donations benefitting the foundation.
The overall winner will receive $25,000 and a trip to Los Angeles Comic Con.
Community members can find the competition and voting information through the Stan Lee Super Kids website here.
