Nielsen: Netflix Reality Competition Series ‘Wonka’s The Golden Ticket’ Topped Weekly Household TV Streaming Through Oct. 4

Netflix’s reality competition series “Wonka’s The Golden Ticket” generated 1.08 billion viewing minutes to rank No. 1 overall across U.S. household TV’s through Oct. 4, according to new Nielsen data.

With the release of the final two episodes, nearly 18% of viewers were kids 2-11 and 63% of those kids watched with an adult aged 18 to 49.

“East of Eden” is Netflix’s latest original series adapted from a book. The John Steinbeck novel adaptation premiered on Oct. 1 and debuted on the charts at No. 2 among originals and No. 3 overall with 782 million minutes

Apple TV’s “Ted Lasso” scored 750 million minutes to finish as the No. 3 original and the No. 5 overall title following the release of the penultimate episode of season four. This marked the show’s 10th consecutive week on the charts. With nine episodes under its belt in season four (through Oct. 4), the new season totaled 4.7 billion minutes, which is about 9% higher than the first nine episodes of season three in 2023. The show also remains Apple TV’s most prolific series in the annals of the top 10, having appeared on the originals chart a total of 34 times (followed by “Silo” at 13).

A new season of “The Great British Baking Show” premiered on Netflix on Sept. 22, with episodes releasing weekly on Tuesdays. The competition series cooked up 486 million viewing minutes across 117 episodes this interval (No. 8 on originals), also marking its 70th appearance in the top 10—the most ever for a Top 10 Original title.

Two of Fox’s primetime broadcast series joined the acquired chart as their most recent seasons were added to Netflix. “Murder in a Small Town” totaled 661 million minutes (No. 6), and “Doc” drew 611 minutes (No. 7). This is the first top 10 appearance for “Murder in a Small Town,” while “Doc” has charted twice before. Seasons one and two of “Murder” are available on both Netflix and Hulu, while “Doc” splits its seasons between the two streamers, with seasons one and two on Netflix and its current season three available on Hulu.

Viewing of catalog episodes of “Gilmore Girls” climbed about 8% week-over-week to 551 million minutes across Hulu and Prime Video. This also marks the show’s 100th top 10 appearance. It ranks 11th in appearances among acquired top 10 shows.

“American Horror Story” also remained on the charts with 712 million viewing minutes on Hulu (No. 3 acquired, No. 6 overall) following three more episodes hitting the platform.

Toy Story 5 retained No. 1 among Top 10 Movies with 687 million minutes watched in its first full week of availability on Disney+. Viewing continues to be largely driven by kids 2-11 (42% of the audience).

Following at No. 2 with 553 million minutes was the Nate Bargatze film The Breadwinner, which debuted on Netflix Sept. 26 following an early summer box office run.

Debuting on the movies chart was the anime feature Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba — The Movie: Infinity Castle (220 million minutes, No. 8). The film joined Hulu and Netflix on Sept. 28 and carried one of the most diverse audiences of any title for the week: 40% Hispanic, 12% Asian, 19% Black and 26% White.

As noted in Nielsen’sAnime Day article from earlier this year, the anime genre brings fans from all different backgrounds together.
