Epic’s new games launcher is ‘vibe coded’theverge.com
Epic Games is announcing a big refresh of its PC games launcher today in preview, saying that the new version is “way faster” and now supports Linux. But the company, which has been publicly making a big push into AI-assisted development, also notes that the refresh was “vibe coded.”
I don’t care that this is vibe coded and that title is pure clickbait. This is huge! Native support for Linux! And also:
To bring Fortnite to Linux, we are rebuilding Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) and working with distro maintainers on security requirements. Once it’s working with a critical mass of distro maintainers, we’ll bring Fortnite to Linux
We’ll also make these improvements available to other developers so they can bring their games to Linux players.
And since I wondered how native Windows-games are supposed to run on Linux, the FAQ delivers:
The new Epic Games Launcher runs natively on Linux, but many games are Windows-only builds and may need a compatibility layer. Check each game’s Linux compatibility before installing.
So, just add the games to Steam and launch it with Proton.
You can download the new launcher here. It’s an AppImage on Linux.
