Valve is discontinuing the Valve Index, its original PC VR headset released back in 2019. The company has begun clearing out remaining stock this week, marking the end of the Index era as Valve shifts fully to its new Steam Frame headset.
Valve has now heavily discounted all remaining Index hardware. The headset on its own has dropped to £367, while replacement Index controllers are listed at £111 each. Valve is also selling off accessory stock, including the tether cable at £95. In a statement, the company confirmed that “Valve Index is no longer being produced. Remaining Index headsets, controllers and accessories are still available at the new prices while supplies last.”
The Index launched at £999 for the full kit and held that price for its entire lifespan. Valve never introduced a permanent discount or a revised model, and the headset remained one of the most expensive PC VR options on the market. With the Steam Frame now positioned as Valve’s flagship VR device, the company is retiring the Index entirely rather than keeping it as a lower‑cost alternative.
The Steam Frame replaces the Index with a standalone design capable of running games natively from the headset itself. It also supports wireless PC VR streaming, removing the need for a tethered gaming PC and the bulky breakout box that defined the Index. Valve is now focused on the Steam Frame ecosystem, leaving the Index behind after seven years on the market.
KitGuru says: The Index had a long run, but with the Steam Frame now taking centre stage, Valve is finally winding down its first‑generation VR hardware.
