#ColoursOfNavaratri: Day 3 – Red haute, classically cool
![]()
For Carnatic vocalist Manasi Prasad, silk saris, treasured heirlooms and a thoughtfully put- together concert look are all part of the Navaratri festive ritual. Dressed in red for Day 3, she reflects on the personal memories, musical heritage and style choices that make Navaratri so close to her heart.’THIS SEASON HOLDS A SPECIAL PLACE IN MY HEART'”For me, Navaratri has always been much more than a season of concerts. It is a time when music, devotion and community come to- gether,” Manasi shares. From revisiting Navavarana and Navaratri krithis to childhood memories of kolu, the season holds a special place in her heart. “I also associate it with childhood memories of kolu, visiting homes, singing and receiving that little packet of sundal, and of course spending time with my music gurus!” she smiles. “There is something wonderfully intimate and joyful about these traditions.”
I love red because it has a presence and represents positivity. It is vibrant, auspicious and full of life

‘I LOVE RED BECAUSE IT HAS A PRESENCE AND REPRESENTS POSITIVITY’Reflecting on the significance of red beyond its auspicious associations, she says, “I love red because it has a presence and represents positivity. It is vibrant, auspicious and full of life, but it doesn’t always have to be loud; it can also be sharply elegant. And, during Navaratri, red carries that wonderful association with Shakti- with strength and feminine energy.”‘BEING FASHIONABLE AND BEING A DEEPLY COMMITTED MUSICIAN AREN’T MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE'”For me Sudha Ragunathan is always the OG style diva -— her aura is magnetic, and she brings grace and glamour in equal measure,” Manasi laughs. She also admires Bengaluru-based vainika Suma Sudhindra for her jewellery collection and distinctive flair. “Artistes like these are a great inspiration that being fashionable and being a deeply committed musician are not mutually exclusive,” she concludes.’I love deep and rich jewel tone colours for my sari'”My formula is probably quite simple: a beautiful sari, traditional but not over-the-top jewellery, and light makeup,” Manasi shares. “I love deep and rich jewel tone colours for my sari, with minimal embellishment besides the border, so that the colour speaks. I love big earrings, as long as they are not too heavy!” Her stage wardrobe, she smiles, is “a slightly more heightened version of me”. In everyday life, however, she prefers practicality and comfort, while keeping her style elegant and authentic.

A sari full of memories”I think everyone has certain pieces of attire that are much more than just clothing – they carry memories, associations and symbolism,” Manasi reflects. Her treasured piece is a blue Kanjeevaram with a red gatti pettu border, gifted by her paati. “I have worn it so many times but still reach for it for an important occasion, because I feel her love wrapping around me when I wear it,” she says.BEAUTY FILEA polished beauty look that balances red’s boldness with a soft, luminous finish.

- Define the eyes: Try softly kohl-lined eyes with neutral eyeshadow.
- Make lips the focus: Choose a classic red lip or a muted rose shade for a softer finish.
- Add a subtle glow: Use a touch of highlighter on the cheekbones for a radiant finish.
