The Fool Night anime will premiere worldwide on Netflix on November 26, 2026, with every episode available on the same day. The adaptation is a joint project between SUNRISE and SHAFT, marking the first collaboration between the two animation studios.
Set in a future where Earth receives no sunlight and the planet is running out of oxygen, the story follows Toshiro Kamiya, a young man struggling to survive in poverty. Humanity relies on a technology called Transfloration, which turns people into plants by implanting seeds into their bodies. The process provides oxygen in a world where ordinary plant life has largely disappeared.
Transfloration initially offers a way for people close to death to help humanity survive. However, the financial reward attached to the procedure also attracts people who are not terminally ill. For someone like Toshiro, who has little money and few options, the technology presents a difficult choice between his future and the needs of a society running out of time.
Fool Night is based on the manga written and illustrated by Kasumi Yasuda. The series began serialisation in Shogakukan’s Big Comic Superior magazine in November 2020 and features science fiction with dystopian and post-apocalyptic themes.
