ROG Xbox Ally X pushes 151 FPS in Cyberpunk 2077 with Radeon RX 9070 XT eGPU and frame generation

    What you need to know

A ROG Xbox Ally X paired with a Radeon RX 9070 XT eGPU averaged 151 FPS in Cyberpunk 2077 at 3440×1440 using FSR upscaling and frame generation. The docked setup demonstrates the handheld’s graphics potential, but the figure doesn’t represent native rendering performance or establish results without frame generation.

A Reddit enthusiast has paired ASUS’s ROG Xbox Ally X with an external AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT, turning the handheld into a surprisingly capable docked gaming system.

In a Cyberpunk 2077 benchmark, the setup reportedly averaged 151 FPS at 3440×1440, though the eye-catching figure comes with an important asterisk: frame generation was enabled.

The test ran Cyberpunk 2077 version 2.31 with ray-traced reflections and shadows enabled, ray-traced lighting set to Ultra, and path tracing disabled. According to the benchmark results highlighted by GameGPU, AMD FSR 2.1 upscaling was set to Auto, alongside FSR 3.1 frame generation.

The roughly 64-second run recorded an average of 151 FPS, with frame rates ranging from 101.67 FPS to 192.57 FPS.

The system combines the handheld’s Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor and 24GB of LPDDR5X memory with the desktop GPU’s 16GB of GDDR6. A USB4-connected eGPU dock made the pairing possible, allowing the handheld to offload demanding graphics workloads when connected to an external display. The owner also reported positive results playing SteamVR titles.

The RX 9070 XT is capable of handling demanding ray-traced games on its own. In our review of AMD’s flagship, we measured 54 FPS at native 1440p with Cyberpunk 2077’s RT Ultra preset on an overclocked Sapphire model, rising to 92 FPS with FSR 4 upscaling. Those figures aren’t directly comparable to the handheld experiment, which used different settings and frame generation.

Since frame generation inserts additional frames between traditionally rendered ones, the reported 151 FPS doesn’t reflect the game’s underlying rendering performance or input responsiveness.

How much does USB4 limit Radeon RX 9070 XT eGPU performance on the ROG Xbox Ally X compared with desktop PCIe?

USB4 is considerably more restrictive than a desktop PCIe connection, but the test does not measure how much performance the RX 9070 XT loses over USB4. Its 151 FPS result used upscaling and frame generation, so it cannot be directly compared with the desktop review figures, which used different settings.

How does FSR 3.1 frame generation affect input latency in Cyberpunk 2077 on the ROG Xbox Ally X?

The Cyberpunk 2077 test did not measure input latency, so it does not show whether FSR 3.1 frame generation increased or decreased it. Because frame generation adds frames between traditionally rendered ones, the reported 151 FPS does not represent the game’s input responsiveness.

How does the RX 9070 XT perform with Cyberpunk 2077 path tracing enabled, which was disabled in the Ally X test?

The Ally X test does not show how the RX 9070 XT performs with path tracing enabled, because that setting was disabled. A separate desktop review measured 54 FPS at native 1440p with Cyberpunk 2077’s RT Ultra preset, rising to 92 FPS with FSR 4 upscaling, but those results do not establish path-tracing performance.

How do FSR 2.1 and FSR 4 compare for image quality and performance in Cyberpunk 2077 on the RX 9070 XT?

There is no direct image-quality or performance comparison between FSR 2.1 and FSR 4 in Cyberpunk 2077 on the RX 9070 XT. The ROG Xbox Ally X eGPU setup averaged 151 FPS at 3440×1440 using FSR 2.1 Auto and FSR 3.1 frame generation, while an overclocked Sapphire RX 9070 XT reached 92 FPS at 1440p with FSR 4 in a separate RT Ultra test. Different settings and frame generation make those results unsuitable for a direct comparison.

Likewise, USB4 bandwidth is considerably more restrictive than a desktop PCIe connection, and an external GPU requires a dock, power supply, and additional hardware. The result shows what a handheld can achieve when docked, but it doesn’t establish sustained gameplay performance without upscaling and frame generation.
