Things are going from bad to worse for Tom Cruise’s apocalyptic satire Diggerin its second weekend at the domestic box office.
Directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, Digger stars Cruise as freewheeling oil tycoon Digger Rockwell, whose reckless actions set off a cataclysmic ecological disaster. After Digger earned a dismal $8 million in its opening weekend from 3,321 North American theaters, the film failed to shovel itself out of its gaping hole as domestic ticket sales dropped an estimated 60% at the domestic box office in its second frame.
According to Variety,Diggeris projected to earn $3.2 million from 3,321 theaters from Oct. 9-11. Deadline, however, is projecting a 64% dive for the film, which amounts to $2.9 million in weekend two ticket sales.
If Variety’s number holds, it will boost the film’s running domestic tally to $14.3 million, while Deadline’s forecast would up the gross to $14 million. Through Sunday, Digger has earned an estimated $20 million internationally.
Per Variety, “Warner Bros. spent above $160 million to produce the film, which is shaping up to be one of the biggest bombs ever, with losses that could top $200 million theatrically.” Digger’sproduction budget doesn’t include marketing costs, residuals and other expenses.
