TV and film producer Ekta Kapoor, who made a mark for herself by backing some of the most cult classic television serials, has seemingly announced a sequel to the 2011 hit The Dirty Picture. The film, starring Vidya Balan, Naseeruddin Shah, Emraan Hashmi and Tusshar Kapoor, was inspired by the life of late actress Silk Smitha. The South Indian star, who starred in over 450 films in her career span of 18 years, died by suicide at the age of 25 at her Chennai residence.
Ekta Kapoor confirms The Dirty Picture 2
After 15 years, Ekta Kapoor has confirmed that there will be a sequel to The Dirty Picture, and she is currently working on it. In a conversation with Ranveer Allahbadia on his podcast, the producer revealed that she has a story to tell through the upcoming sequel.
The Free Press Journal quoted her saying, “One very big film I’m making is The Dirty Picture 2. I’m planning it after 15 years. This time, I believe there is a story I want to tell. The Dirty Picture was about Silk Smitha. It was about a woman who was condemned for standing up against her sexuality. Ab sexuality is about your choice. Maine kabhi usse victim ki tarah nahi dekha. I saw her as someone who celebrated her sexuality, and the film did so well.”
Ekta Kapoor further added that The Dirty Picture 2 will revolve around a prominent figure like Silk Smitha, but avoided sharing whose public life she would showcase, stating that she will announce something major soon.
About The Dirty Picture 2
Released in December 2011, The Dirty Picture was based on the life of the late South Indian actress Silk Smitha, who began her journey in the entertainment industry at the age of 18 and quickly rose to stardom. However, being typecast, career setbacks and relationship failures pushed her into a deep state of depression. She eventually committed suicide and left behind a legacy at the age of 38 that is still cherished by film enthusiasts.
While the announcement of The Dirty Picture 2 has sparked eagerness about the much-awaited sequel, information about its cast, storyline and release date has still not been disclosed. Ektaa Kapoor has yet to officially announce it.
