IDW Publishing has acquired the licence to publish new James Bond comics, and Grant Morrison will write the first series. IGN reports the announcement came out of New York Comic Con 2026, and the publisher is working with Ian Fleming Publications on the project.
Morrison, known for All-Star Superman, a multi-year Batman run, Animal Man, Doom Patrol, and New X-Men, will open with a six-part story called Sunbreaker. That’s the arc’s title, not the series name, which hasn’t been announced. No artist or release date has been confirmed either.

What Morrison is promising
Morrison says Sunbreaker “attempts to create a definitive Bond story featuring everything fans love about the character and his world, while adding a whole lot more.” The pitch includes new cars, new gadgets, and what Morrison calls a “terrifying new ultimate villain ripped straight from the headlines”. Morrison also describes a world “very like our own as reflected in a deadly funhouse mirror”, with Bond appearing in “a few unfamiliar situations” against unfamiliar foes.
The writer also cast Bond as a British figure in the vein of King Arthur, Robin Hood, and Sherlock Holmes, and said they have been a fan “for as long as I can remember”. ComicBook.com notes that some of Morrison’s earliest characters, such as Gideon Stargrave, were partly based on Bond.
IDW’s pitch
IDW CEO Davidi Jonas told The Hollywood Reporter the company doesn’t want to “simply provide supplemental and optional stories”. Instead, he said, IDW aims to “take radical swings” that stay true to the franchise while reinventing it for the modern comic book landscape.
Bond has moved between publishers over the decades. IGN notes the most recent was Dynamite Entertainment, and that this series starts IDW’s partnership with Ian Fleming Publications.
The comic arrives while the film franchise is between actors. If you’re following the casting race, we’ve covered what Gary Oldman said about the next Bond being chosen. Nothing announced so far ties the comic to the films, and no UAE availability or distribution details have been given.
