Jensen Huang received the National Medal of Science, the United States government’s highest scientific honour, from President Donald Trump at the Golden Age of American Innovation Summit at the US Institute of Peace in Washington on October 8. The citation recognises Huang for advancing the GPU from a graphics chip into a general-purpose computing architecture that underpins modern AI and scientific research.
“The entire world is now running on NVIDIA,” Trump said, introducing Huang as someone whose “determination laid the foundations for the explosion of superintelligence and put America at the front of the race.” The medal has been awarded since 1963, and Trump presented it for the first time during his second term.

The GPU’s transformation is at the core of Huang’s citation. Originally designed to render video game graphics, the chip’s ability to run thousands of calculations simultaneously turned out to be exactly what AI training required. NVIDIA’s CUDA platform, launched in 2006, gave researchers a way to harness that parallel computing power for workloads ranging from drug discovery to deep learning, and the rest is the story of the last decade in tech.
Huang was not the only honouree. Elon Musk, Google co-founder Sergey Brin, and AMD CEO Lisa Su also received the National Medal of Science. Dell founder Michael Dell and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella received the National Medal of Technology and Innovation. The lineup spans chips, cloud infrastructure, and hardware, covering much of the AI supply chain.

Alongside the ceremony, eleven technology companies pledged a combined $2.4 billion in AI tools and computing credits for the government’s Genesis Mission. NVIDIA made the largest individual commitment, pledging $1 billion over five years for AI and quantum computing research. For Huang personally, the medal adds to an already remarkable run of recognition, including the IEEE Medal of Honor in 2026 and the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering in 2025.
