Grant Morrison is taking on 007, which is not something I thought I’d ever be writing. IDW Publishing and Ian Fleming Publications Ltd have announced a new partnership that will bring James Bond back to comics, beginning with a six-part adventure titled Sunbreaker from the acclaimed writer.
The partnership will introduce all-new stories featuring Ian Fleming’s legendary British spy, who first appeared in the 1953 novel Casino Royale. Morrison, whose celebrated comics career includes All-Star Superman, New X-Men, and Batman, will launch the initiative with a story that promises a fresh perspective on Bond while embracing the character’s familiar world of espionage. Dynamite Entertainment last held the James Bond license.
Morrison said they’ve been a lifelong fan of James Bond and couldn’t pass up the opportunity to write such an iconic British character.
“I’ve been a James Bond fan for as long as I can remember and this opportunity to put my own stamp on a British character as iconic as King Arthur, Robin Hood or Sherlock Holmes, was too good to miss,” Morrison said.
What to expect from James Bond: Sunbreaker
Morrison describes Sunbreaker as an attempt to deliver a definitive James Bond adventure, complete with the elements longtime fans expect and some unexpected additions.
The six-part storyline will send Bond into unfamiliar situations against new enemies, with the writer teasing a distorted reflection of the modern world filled with intrigue and deception.
Morrison also promises new cars, gadgets, and a formidable villain inspired by current headlines. The writer describes Bond as charismatic, ruthless, and unstoppable, suggesting their interpretation will embrace the spy’s more dangerous qualities.
The story will also present what Morrison calls the greatest challenge of Bond’s life.
IDW promises a bold new era for 007
Amanda Douglas, Managing Director at Ian Fleming Publications Ltd, expressed enthusiasm for the new partnership and Morrison’s involvement.
“We are delighted to be partnering with IDW on this new chapter for James Bond comics,” Douglas said. “From our earliest conversations, it was clear they shared our ambition for Bond and our respect for Ian Fleming’s creation.”
Simon Ward, Publishing Director at Ian Fleming Publications Ltd, emphasized the opportunities comics provide for exploring stories that might not work in other formats.
Ward said IDW impressed the company with its vision for original Bond comics and expressed confidence that Morrison would bring something distinctive to the franchise.
IDW CEO Davidi Jonas also discussed the publisher’s ambitions for the license, emphasizing its desire to do more than produce supplemental adventures.
“Our goal isn’t to simply provide supplemental and optional stories,” Jonas said. “We strive to take radical swings which celebrate and stay true to the very qualities that make the franchise special while also reinventing it for the modern comic book landscape.”
The announcement positions Morrison’s Sunbreaker as the beginning of a broader publishing initiative, with additional James Bond comics planned through IDW.
Further details about James Bond #1, including its release date and additional creative team members, have not yet been announced.
