Almost 10 years after its release, “Crazy Rich Asians” is officially getting a sequel — sort of.

On Oct. 8, HBO announced that they have greenlit an eight episode series that will pick up after the events of the 2018 film. Along with the news, they also confirmed that Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Ronny Chieng and Michelle Yeoh would be reprising their roles.

The one-hour drama series is based on Kevin Kwan’s book series.Adele Lim, who co-wrote the film, will showrun and executive produce the show alongside Kwan, Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, and the film’s director Jon M. Chu.

In a teaser, HBO shared that production for the series will start in 2027.

“I am thrilled that the ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ family is getting back together,” Kwan said in a statement, thanking HBO and Warner Bros. Television. “Our incredible fans around the world have been patiently waiting for this, and it will be worth the wait! Getting to see my stories and characters come to life with the breathing room of an HBO series is a dream come true, and I am so excited to experience the magic that Adele, Jon, Nina, Brad, our amazing writers and iconic cast will create.”

Chu, who most recently directed the “Wicked” films, added that, eight years ago, “Crazy Rich Asians” changed his life.

“I got to make it with the most creative and hilarious group of people I’ve ever known. Since then, this cast has become movie stars, superheroes, arena-filling performers and even an Oscar winner,” the filmmaker continued, adding that bringing everyone back together “feels like coming home.”

He noted that it has been incredible watching people make this movie part of their lives, “from mahjong nights to becoming the ultimate airplane movie.”

Chu said that he’s excited to finally get the chance to answer the question he’s been asked almost every day for eight years: “‘When are we getting the sequel?’ Well… bok bok b—–, we’re back.”

“Crazy Rich Asians” follows humble professor Rachel Chu (Wu) as she travels with her boyfriend Nick Young (Golding) to Singapore, where she discovers that he is rich — like, filthy rich. As she’s thrust into a world with some of the wealthiest and most influential families in the country, she faces rejection from Nick’s mother, Eleanor (Yeoh).

The rom-com also starred Awkwafina, Gemma Chan, Ken Jeong and a brief appearance by Harry Shum Jr.

After its release, “Crazy Rich Asians” became the highest-grossing Hollywood studio romantic comedy at the North American box office in nearly a decade.
