The PlayStation 5 was set to become the ultimate PlayStation system, as its specs should have allowed for backward compatibility with all previous systems. However, the PlayStation 3 was left behind in Sony’s plans, as third-generation PlayStation games are not available natively on PlayStation 5 and can only be played
Earlier this year, we got a first glimpse of how the system handles PlayStation 3 games, but now another developer has released an unofficial port of the RPCS3 emulator that doesn’t require installing Linux on the system, though you will still need a jailbroken console.
“Build scripts for running RPCS3 (the PlayStation 3 emulator) as a native title on a jailbroken PS5,” reads the official description of RPCS3-PS5 on GitHub, where you can also download the emulator. “RPCS3 renders through Vulkan on PS5_Vulkan’s RADV port, plays audio through SceAudioOut and reads DualSense controllers through ScePad. The frontend is RPCS3’s own Big Picture Mode.”
As of the time of writing, the port of the popular PlayStation 3 emulator was only tested on a jailbroken PlayStation 5 Pro and with a few games. Need for Speed Carbon is reported to be fully playable, while the first inFAMOUS has performance issues. No other game has been tested so far, so widespread issues should be expected, although it is expected many of these will be fixed fairly quickly, looking at the staggering number of modding projects that are seeing incredibly quick development, including unofficial native PC ports and emulators such as KyTyPS5, even though this is an unofficial port of the emulator and so isn’t supported by the official development team.
Considering how RPCS3 runninging certain games at 60 FPS out of the box, it has become even clearer that it’s not strictly technical limitations that are preventing PlayStation 3 games from officially hitting the PlayStation Store, but rather the effort required to optimize emulation to de<a href="https://comicvibe.com/live-updates-from-new-york-comic-con-2026-%f0%9f%94%b4/” title=”Live Updates From New York Comic Con 2026 🔴”>liver smooth gameplay

Hopefully, seeing how there’s still plenty of interest, Sony will address the matter with the PlayStation 6, which will have more than enough CPU horsepower to handle the games developed for one of the most architecturally complex gaming systems of all time without requiring much optimization.
