Daisy May Cooper has written her first novel, a comic thriller about three generations of women confronting their past.
What Took You So Long? will be an imprint of Simon & Schuster, on 5th November. And the This Country star is promoting it with a mini-tour next month
Posting a video on her social media, in which she showed the book to her two-year-old son, the comic actor said: “If Bob Mortimer can do it, why can’t I?”
What Took You So Long?‘s plot follows Mary, whose husband unexpectedly leaves her after forty-five years. At the same time, Emma finally finds the courage to do a runner from hers. For the first time in years, mother and daughter find themselves living under one roof in the Cornish fishing village of Polperro, along with eight-year-old Ivy (and her beloved stuffed giraffe, Tw*t).
They have returned to Mary’s childhood home after the recent death of her mother. But as they navigate their new lives and attempt to reconnect with one another, long-forgotten family truths begin to surface. Going home was never part of the plan; neither was digging up the past.
Cooper, who returns to Last One Laughing UK for its Halloween special on Amazon Prime from 23rd October, competing with Reece Shearsmith, Jack Dee, Phil Wang, Lou Sanders, Tom Allen and Harriet Dyer, with the show once again hosted by Jimmy Carr and Roisin Conaty, is also releasing Nightwatch, the series in which she and her brother Charlie stay in some of the UK’s most haunted locations, on Blu-ray, DVD and digital three days later.

Also set to return for the third and final series of the comedy thriller series Am I Being Unreasonable? on BBC One, which she co-writes and stars in with Selin Hizli, she will be promoting her novel with an appearance at Cheltenham Racecourse on 5th November; Bridgewater Hall in Manchester on 7th and the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in London on 8th.
Cooper previously published her autobiography, Don’t Laugh It’ll Only Encourage Her, in 2021.
Gallery is also publishing Mortimer’s forthcoming fourth novel, Michael on 19th November and is set to put out Fatiha El-Ghorri’s memoir, The Perks Of My Hijab, on 18th February.
