Disney gave fans an extensive look at its upcoming slate during San Diego Comic-Con Málaga, bringing exclusive footage, surprise appearances and several major upcoming releases to the convention’s Hall M.
The presentation on Oct. 3 covered six projects spanning Marvel, Pixar, Walt Disney Animation Studios and 20th Century Studios: Hexed, Ice Age: Boiling Point, Gatto, Whalefall, VisionQuest and Avengers: Doomsday.
The afternoon began with animation, including exclusive clips from Hexed, which follows teenager Billie as the discovery of her magical powers leads her into a world of witches. The footage offered a closer look at the fantastical world of Hexe and Billie’s journey to find where she belongs.
The presentation then moved to Ice Age: Boiling Point. The latest installment reunites Manny, Sid, Diego, Ellie and Buck for an adventure involving dinosaurs and lava in the Lost World. Scrat also returns, this time alongside Baby Scrat and the enormous Jurassic Scrat. The movie is set to hit theaters on Feb. 5, 2027.
Pixar’s Gatto received an even more substantial preview, with two previously unseen scenes screened for the crowd.
Set in Venice, the movie follows Nero, a black cat voiced by Mark Ruffalo who finds himself indebted to feline mob boss Rocco, voiced by Laurence Fishburne. One of the scenes shown in Málaga leaned into that criminal underworld, with Nero forced to sing a password to gain entry. Directed by Luca filmmaker Enrico Casarosa, Gatto arrives in theaters March 5, 2027.
Things got considerably darker when Disney shifted to Whalefall.
Based on Daniel Kraus’ novel, the survival thriller stars Austin Abrams as Jay Gardiner, a young man swallowed by a sperm whale while diving for the remains of his late father, played by Josh Brolin.
The footage shown in Málaga emphasized the claustrophobic nature of Jay’s predicament. Trapped inside the whale with limited oxygen, he is forced to contend with the creature’s hostile internal environment while desperately searching for a way out.
Brolin, Abrams and director Brian Duffield made surprise appearances to discuss the film with BBC journalist Ali Plumb.
“The movie is about the relationship, not the whale,” Duffield told the audience, emphasizing the father-son story at the center of the unusual survival premise.
Marvel then took over Hall M.
Paul Bettany appeared to introduce VisionQuest, which completes the television trilogy that began with WandaVision and continued with Agatha All Along. Rather than simply screening a trailer, Marvel showed attendees the first 22 minutes of the series’ premiere episode.
The series finds Vision searching for a new purpose while interacting with artificial intelligences embedded within his programming, including F.R.I.D.A.Y., E.D.I.T.H., J.A.R.V.I.S. and Ultron. Bettany returns as Vision, while James Spader reprises his role as Ultron.
VisionQuest premieres Oct. 14 on Disney+.
Disney saved its biggest surprise for last.
Following a prerecorded greeting from directors Anthony and Joe Russo, Anthony Mackie, David Harbour and Winston Duke surprised fans by taking the stage to discuss Avengers: Doomsday. The three actors, who portray Captain America, Red Guardian and M’Baku, respectively, joined host Ali Plumb for a conversation before treating the audience to an exclusive montage from the upcoming Marvel blockbuster.
The presentation also confirmed that Avengers: Doomsday will premiere in Spain on Dec. 17, one day ahead of its U.S. release.
With everything from witches and mob-connected cats to a man trapped inside a whale and Marvel’s next major crossover, Disney’s Comic-Con Málaga presentation offered fans an unusually broad preview of what the studio has coming next.
