IDW has announced two exciting new upcoming Star Trek titles, one of which will be written by Gates McFadden (Doctor Beverly Crusher on Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Picard), and one of which will be the first Franchise graphic novel, which will be written by Timothy Zahn (Star Wars: Thrawn; Heir to the Empire). Each writer will be supported by some of IDW’s Star Trek line’s talented artistic alums! Here’s what we know so far.
Gates McFadden and Timothy Zahn on Star Trek

McFadden is penning a limited series based on her onscreen character, Star Trek: Crusher. Slated to begin publication in summer 2027, the series will feature art by Megan Levens and colors by Charlie Kirchoff. A letterer for the project has yet to be announced. The story will be set in the two decade gap between Star Trek: Nemesis and the third season of Picard.

McFadden was quoted in the press release as saying,
“It’s such an honor to return to Starfleet and expand Beverly Crusher’s storyline in a whole new way. I’ve spent years bringing the words of other great writers to life in Beverly’s shoes, so it’s inspiring and thrilling to now be the one scripting a new chapter in this fabulous character’s saga. I’m excited for Star Trek fans to read this comic and I’m so grateful for their continued support.”
If you’re looking for something to do while you wait for Crusher to arrive, consider checking out McFadden’s podcast, InvestiGates, on which she interviews a plethora of Franchise actors and creators.
Meanwhile, Zahn is penning Star Trek: Roc’s Egg, the Franchise’s first original graphic novel. Zahn is best know for his foundational work expanding the Star Wars universe through prose, and clearly, IDW is hoping those skills will transfer across fictional galactic boundaries.
The OGN is scheduled for publication in October 2027 and will be set on Deep Space 9, with art by Ángel Hernández.
As revealed by Nerdist, here’s the official description for Roc’s Egg:
“Something is rotten on Deep Space 9. When a mysterious artifact known as a Roc’s Egg arrives on the station—and is seemingly destroyed in transit—a Federation JAG investigation is called in to uncover what really happened. But the deeper the team digs, the stranger the mystery becomes: a secret auction, a station full of wealthy collectors and dangerous criminals, a priceless artifact that may not be what it seems, and a murder waiting to happen. From acclaimed author Zahn and artist Hernández comes Roc’s Egg, a twisty new mystery set aboard Deep Space 9 where everyone has something to hide—and the truth may be more valuable than the treasure itself.”
Boldly Going in 2027
