Sega’s New House of the Dead Is an 85-Inch Front Door With Two VR Headsets Behind It

Attractions Magazine published the details on September 30, crediting a Sega Amusements product page, and what it describes is a miniature gothic manor. The front door is an 85-inch display. Two 43-inch vertical screens stand in as shuttered windows. There is animated lighting and environmental audio coming off the facade. Two players step inside, put on commercial VR headsets, pick up weapon controllers with haptic recoil and work through three missions, each player with a 2.1 channel audio rig of their own. The magazine also says the game was built in Unreal Engine 5, and Arcade Heroes, reading the teaser, sees tethered guns in the manner of Sega’s 2022 VR Agent cabinet. UploadVR puts the debut at the IAAPA Expo in Orlando, November 17 to 20.

Hold that sheet loosely. Arcade Heroes went to the same Sega address the same day and found one cryptic line where the specs should have been, and guessed the magazine had caught the page before Sega covered it back up. The address now shows a single sentence, “Get ready for the Reawakening.”, and a link home. On October 1 Attractions Magazine added an editor’s note saying the page “is currently not displaying any specifics and details,” and reworded parts of its own story to match. A working clock tower was in the first version, which is how VGC came to repeat it. It is not in the magazine’s text anymore. So every number above traces back to one outlet’s look at a page nobody else saw, and Sega has confirmed none of it.

The 85-inch screen is not for the players

Read that list again and notice where the money went. Two people are inside the manor with headsets on. They cannot see the 85-inch front door. They cannot see the shuttered windows or the lighting. Every bit of that is aimed outward, at the people walking past on the way to the skee-ball.

Which is the oldest trick in the business and also the correct one. A cabinet earns its floor space by what it does to people who have not paid yet. VGC notes the last mainline entry was Scarlet Dawn, in arcades in 2018, and Attractions Magazine dates the original to Japanese arcades in 1996, so the series has spent most of its life as a machine that had to shout across a room full of other machines. Putting the shouting on an 85-inch panel and the game behind a headset is a reasonable 2026 answer to that problem.

Where the VR money is going

Here is what makes the timing land harder than a teaser deserves. Two days before that spec sheet went out, Mighty Coconut announced it was cutting ten more people, its second round of layoffs this year, with Lucas Martell pointing at the shrinking flow of new players arriving in Walkabout Mini Golf. That is one of the best games on the platform, made by a studio that did essentially everything right, and the pipeline of people who buy a headset and then find it is thinning out.

Meanwhile Sega is building a haunted house with an 85-inch front door. VR.org has been tracking out-of-home VR growing while the home side contracts since August, and the pattern keeps holding. Operators with a door and a ticket price are expanding. Licensed properties keep turning up in venues instead of on storefronts. The headset in your closet gets fewer new reasons to come out.

I do not love that. I would rather the good studios survive on people playing at home, because that is the version of this hobby I actually live in. But a game has to find a buyer, and a ticket only has to find a Saturday afternoon.

What Sega still has not said

Everything an operator needs. No headset model, so nobody knows what the cleaning and replacement cycle looks like on a unit that will have two strangers an hour putting it on their face. No footprint, which for a themed enclosure with an 85-inch panel on the front is the first question any family entertainment center is going to ask. No price, and in this business the price is the whole story: Arcade Heroes expects it to be costly, as Scarlet Dawn was, and a gothic manor with three screens and two headsets in it is not going to come in under that.

November answers some of it. I want to stand in front of that door. I also want Sega to put a number on the sheet it hands operators in Orlando, because that number is what decides whether this lands in a hundred venues or in three.
