Netflix proved that rowing and romance are a match made in heaven with the new YA series “Crew Girl.” The Canadian production doubled its viewership in the second week following its release, locking in a renewal for Season 2.

“Crew Girl” is centered on a promising rower named Teagan Tao (Miku Martineau), who is forced to put her dreams on hold after her father leaves her and her mother in financial ruin. As she transfers to Easton Prep, Teagan learns that the only way she can continue with her rowing aspirations is if she takes on the position of coxswain for the varsity crew boat.

Filled with romance, family tensions, and sports drama, the Netflix series quickly won audiences over. After bingeing all eight episodes, you might be wondering what to watch next. Fortunately, Netflix has a solid line-up of YA series to help you narrow down the search. Most of these shows feature love triangles and high-stakes sports competitions that will keep you just as hooked as “Crew Girl.”

If you were captivated by Miku Martineau’s performance in “Crew Girl,” you’ll be thrilled to learn that she plays the lead in another Netflix YA drama. “Bet” has already been renewed for Season 2 and is set in an elite boarding school where students gamble their way to the top of the social hierarchy. Martineau plays Yumeko, a new student who was kicked out of her previous school due to her gambling addiction.

When she enrolls in St. Dominic’s, Yumeko is determined to use her gambling tactics to assert her power on campus and avenge her parents’ deaths. In a place where everything is a game, and the stakes are high, her winning streak could easily make her a target. Although “Crew Girl” is a more uplifting YA series about rowing and romance, “Bet” explores the power dynamics that come with being a champion and bending the rules for one’s own benefit. Audiences will get to see a whole new side of Martineau as a performer, with Yumeko being a foil to Teagan.

    Finding Her Edge

Jeff Norton, who is an executive producer on “Crew Girl,” was also one of the creators behind another popular Netflix series featuring a love triangle in the world of sports. “Finding Her Edge” follows Adriana Russo (Madelyn Keys) as she partners up with Brayden Elliot (Cale Ambrozic), in the hopes of saving her family rink and carrying on her parents’ skating legacy. On top of practicing day and night for the world championship, she and Brayden agree to fake date in order to attract sponsors.

Much like Teagan’s dilemma of whether to end up with Josh (Samuel Braun) or Cam (Kyle Clark), Adriana is torn between two love interests. Despite warming up to Brayden, she also harbors feelings for her former skating partner, Freddie (Olly Atkins). Throughout the season, she comes to terms with who she wants by her side when she wins the gold, and how to help her family navigate financial unrest.

“Finding Her Edge” also focuses on Adriana’s complicated relationship with her sisters, particularly Elise (Alexandra Beaton), who resents Adriana for living out her skating dreams. If you enjoyed the competitive atmosphere of “Crew Girl” and are looking for a new YA romance to fawn over, this Netflix series is worth checking out next. And better yet, Season 2 is already confirmed.

    One Tree Hill

It’s hard not to draw parallels between “Crew Girl” and “One Tree Hill,” considering that Josh and Ryder’s (Connor Paton) dynamic is reminiscent of Nathan (James Lafferty) and Lucas’ (Chad Michael Murray) strained relationship at the beginning of the CW drama. Nathan and Lucas are half-brothers, and their father fuels the rivalry between them by pushing Nathan to become the best player on his high school basketball team. Yet, when Lucas tries out for the Tree Hill Ravens, Nathan is purposefully hostile toward him.

In the same way that Josh and Ryder compete amongst themselves for the stroke spot on the rowing team to gain their grandfather’s approval, Nathan and Lucas are constantly fighting because of their dad. Josh even puts his health at risk in “Crew Girl” to fulfill his family’s expectations, something that also happens in “One Tree Hill” when Lucas finds out that he has a heart condition that could prevent him from playing the sport that he loves.

“One Tree Hill” is also an ensemble series, with other characters to root for. Lucas’ best friend Haley (Bethany Joy Lenz) begins to tutor Nathan and soon falls for him. Peyton (Hilarie Burton) and Brooke (Sophia Bush) are inseparable up until they get warped into a love triangle with Lucas. The TV show ran for nine seasons, so you’ll have plenty to catch up on while waiting for “Crew Girl” Season 2.

    Off Campus

Netflix’s latest YA binge might cater to a younger audience, but for those looking for a more mature series about sports, friendship, and romance, “Off Campus” should be on your radar. The steamy Prime Video series is focused on Hannah Wells (Ella Bright), a music student at Briar U who pretends to be in a relationship with hockey player Garrett Graham (Belmont Cameli) to attract the attention of her crush, Justin Kohl (Josh Heuston). Garrett agrees to this arrangement in exchange for tutoring sessions, wanting to guarantee his spot on the team without his father’s help.

As Hannah and Garrett make their way into each other’s hearts, they also bond over their traumatic pasts. In “Crew Girl,” Josh is pressured to excel at rowing because of his family’s legacy in the sport. At the beginning of the series, he pulls a few strings to ensure his spot as stroke, so as not to disappoint his father and his grandfather. Garrett has a strained relationship with his father, who is a hockey legend. He feels the pressure to excel in the sport due to the name on the back of his jersey, and that is a defining aspect of his storyline in the series.

“Off Campus” also features several other hockey players that Hannah eventually befriends when she and Garrett make their relationship official. Her dynamic with Garrett’s inner circle is similar to Teagan’s bond with the members of the rowing team.

    Surviving Summer

In “Crew Girl,” Teagan is forced to leave her school and move into her mother’s family home on the other side of the country after her father is caught in a scandal. She is initially disappointed that Easton Prep doesn’t have a women’s rowing team, but later finds her footing as a coxswain for the men’s team. Much like Teagan, Summer Torres (Sky Katz) from Netflix’s “Surviving Summer” is forced to adapt to a new life.

After getting expelled from school for her rebellious behavior, her mother decides to send her away for the summer. Summer spends some time in Australia with her estranged aunt and cousins, and while there, she develops an interest in surfing and makes new friendships along the way. The series ran for two seasons on Netflix before it was canceled in 2025 but is still worth checking out if you like the idea of found family in a sports context. Summer might’ve been a skater before her trip to Australia, but she fell in love with surfing and the coastal community in Shorehaven after catching some waves.
