Sony Brings AI Upscaling to Standard PS5 With New QSSR Technology

Sony announced <a href="https://blog.playstation.com/2026/10/01/ai-upscaling-is-coming-to-ps5/” rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank”>Quick Spectral Super Resolution, or QSSR, on October 1, 2026, as a new AI upscaling technology built specifically for the standard PlayStation 5. It arrives first in two major titles, and broader availability depends on developers choosing to implement it.

    What QSSR Actually Does

A lighter-weight AI upscaling approach, QSSR brings measurable image improvements to the standard PS5 without requiring new hardware.

QSSR grew out of Project Amethyst, Sony and AMD’s ongoing AI graphics collaboration. Its architecture is a streamlined neural network, hand-tuned to work within the tighter performance constraints of standard PS5 hardware.

Sony says the technology improves image detail and temporal stability. PSSR remains what Sony calls the “gold standard” on PS5 Pro; QSSR is the leaner version built around what the standard console can actually handle.

That distinction matters. The PS5 Pro carries dedicated machine-learning hardware that lets PSSR operate at a higher performance ceiling, while QSSR is engineered around the constraints of the standard PS5 rather than a direct port of the Pro’s approach.

    Where You’ll See It First

Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei are the first games to receive QSSR support, both patched on the day of the announcement.

Both titles were updated on October 1, 2026, adding QSSR as an additional graphics option on the standard PS5.

Mike Fitzgerald, head of technology at Insomniac Games, said QSSR adds pixel-level clarity and stability to busy environments in Marvel’s Wolverine, including dense streets and alleyways. Jasmin Patry, lead rendering engineer at Sucker Punch Productions, said the technology brings fine-detail improvements and a level of temporal stability that had not previously been possible on the standard PS5.

Independent testing from Digital Foundry adds useful context. In Marvel’s Wolverine, Digital Foundry measured QSSR’s processing cost at roughly 1.5 to 1.8 milliseconds when reconstructing an 864p image up to 1440p, which is a real performance cost rather than a free quality boost.

Games may require dynamic resolution adjustments or other tuning to preserve frame-rate targets once QSSR is active. Digital Foundry also noted that titles already supporting PSSR can integrate QSSR relatively easily. Developers may still need to adjust settings like texture streaming and resolution targets to achieve the best result.

Sony describes the overall improvement as “notable” on image detail and stability, stopping well short of claiming parity with PS5 Pro output.

What This Means for Your PS5

QSSR is a per-game feature, not a system-wide upgrade, so its reach depends entirely on developer adoption.

QSSR will not appear in your games automatically. Every title needs a dedicated patch or native implementation, which means adoption depends on individual developers choosing to support it.

Wider QSSR adoption could make AI-assisted reconstruction a standard option in PS5 graphics menus. That would mean a sharper image without a hardware upgrade, provided each developer follows through with support.
