October is a huge month in publishing, and the new children’s books out in October are no exception! I had such a difficult time narrowing this down to ten picks: be sure to check out Book Riot’s New Release Index for many more new middle grade books and new picture books out this month.

The best new middle grade books of October include an anthology starring disabled kids, historical fiction about the Great Migration, a novel that’s part concrete poetry, and a fantasy story about the prince of Texas. In new children’s graphic novels, we have a couple of adaptations of beloved children’s books as well as a zany fantasy adventure.

As for the new picture books of October, there’s Maggie Tokuda-Hall’s haikus about snow monkeys, a mixed media celebration of humpback whales, and the follow-up to P is for Pterodactyl: The Worst Alphabet Book Ever.

Apologies in advance to your book buying budget!

New Middle Grade Books: October 2026

Boundless: 17 Stories Starring Disabled Kids edited by Marieke Nijkamp (October 27)

This middle grade anthology includes 17 stories about disabled kids, written by disabled authors and edited by the bestselling author Marieke Nijkamp. It represents a wide range of disabilities, including asthma, wheelchair users, juvenile arthritis, diabetes, Deafness, epilepsy, chronic fatigue, and neurodiversity. They include contemporary fiction, mysteries, and speculative stories. Disabled kids continue to be underrepresented in children’s lit, so this is an essential book for school libraries.

Cover Image of Leaving Birdsong by Brenda Woods

Leaving Birdsong by Brenda Woods (October 13)

This middle grade historical novel is set in 1946, during the Great Migration. It follows Abigail as her family moves from Birdsong, South Carolina to Detroit, Michigan. At first, she’s enamored by the new possibilities of this city, including an unsegregated library with a Black librarian, and it inspires her to write poetry. But over time, she recognises the ways racism is present up North as well, and when she’s robbed by a homeless boy, she learns about the reality of poverty. This is the stand-alone companion to The Unsung Hero of Birdsong, USA.

Cover Image of This Is a Door by Daniel Nayeri

This Is a Door by Daniel Nayeri (October 27)

I can’t resist a book that plays with format, and this fantasy middle grade novel looks like a great example. National Book Award and Newbery Honor winner Daniel Nayeri writes about a boy on an adventure with his mouse and dog, delving into the land of the dead and tracking down the dangerous Giantess. Part novel, part concrete poetry, the text forms images, falls down the page, and grows and shrinks to match the tone of the story.

Realmsweep by H.E. Edgmon (October 13)

Rowdy Buckner is the spoiled prince of Texas. He’s also trans, and there’s just one thing he wants that his parents won’t provide: the transfiguration tonics that will transform his body. To prove he can be trusted with the responsibility of such powerful magic, he signs up for Realmsweep, a dangerous scavenger hunt that has him facing off against dragons alongside other preteen teammates. Along the way, he is forced to confront the colonization and inequality that his family has perpetuated. What does it mean to be a good king, and is he capable of it?

New Children’s Graphic Novels: October 2026

cover of Front Desk: The Graphic Novel

Front Desk: The Graphic Novel by Kelly Yang and Fumio Obata (October 20)

The award-winning middle grade novel Front Desk has been adapated to a graphic novel! Mia lives in a motel along with her immigrant parents, who clean the room. She helps at the front desk. What the motel owner doesn’t know, though, is that Mia’s family lets immigrants stay in the empty rooms for free. Meanwhile, Mia is trying to pursue her dreams of being a writer while her parents pressure her to concentrate on math. Front Desk is already a modern classic about immigration, and this graphic novel version will be a great way to reach new audiences.

Cover Image of The Moonlit Spiral by Mike Maihack

The Moonlit Spiral by Mike Maihack (October 6)

The creator of the Cleopatra in Space series is back with a zany fantasy adventure graphic novel about a group of treasure-hunting friends. Rion was content with living a quiet life, especially since he lost his parents to adventuring. Then, he discovers pages from his parents’ journal that outline the path to finding a legendary prize. The catch is that it’s only possible during the once-in-a-decade Silver Moon, which shines for six days. Alongside a couple of friends, Rion embarks on a journey that will change their lives.

Cover Image of Winnie-the-Pooh: The Graphic Novel by A. A. Milne

Winnie-the-Pooh: The Graphic Novel by A. A. Milne, adapted by Kevan Chandler and Joe Sutphin (October 13)

Speaking of adaptations of beloved children’s books, we also have a graphic novelization of Winnie-the-Pooh out this month! It adapts all ten original stories, and while E. H. Shepard’s illustrations leave big shoes to fill, it looks like Kevan Chandler and Joe Sutphin capture their sweet, nostalgic spirit.

    New Picture Books: October 2026

Cover Image of Whale Song by Nicola Davies

Whale Song by Nicola Davies and Britta Teckentrup (October 20)

Through mixed media illustrations, this new picture book beautifully celebrates humpback whales and their songs. Nicola Davies is a zoologist, so the text blends story and educational information. The end notes offer more information about whale songs.

Cover Image of What Rhymes with Pterodactyl?: The Worst Rhyming Book Ever by Raj Haldar

What Rhymes with Pterodactyl?: The Worst Rhyming Book Ever by Raj Haldar and Emi Ordás (October 6)

This is the follow-up to P is for Pterodactyl: The Worst Alphabet Book Ever! It follows Ptolemy the Pterodactyl, a rapper who finds some creative ways to rhyme unrhymable words, including slant rhymes and internal rhymes.

    Bathtime for Snow Monkeys cover

Bathtime for Snow Monkeys by Maggie Tokuda-Hall and Yas Imamura (October 13)

From the team behind the acclaimed Love in the Library picture book, this one is about Japanese macaques keeping warm in a hot spring, and it’s told entirely in haikus. The starred review from Kirkus calls this a “serene, exquisite ode to togetherness—and a gentle gateway to haiku for young readers.”
