    Key Points

    • Christy Carlson Romano admitted that she and Shia LaBeouf got along “like oil and water” on the set of Even Stevens.

    • She said the way the two on-screen siblings were “raised” contributed to their conflicts.

    • Romano’s memoir Once Upon a Trainwreck: The Fall and Rise of a Child Star releases on Oct. 6.

Christy Carlson Romano and Shia LaBeouf‘s relationship was not unlike that of Ren and Louis Stevens.

Romano is opening up about her relationship with herEven Stevens costar, whom she admitted that she did not get along with from the beginning.

“It was oil and water,” she confessed on the Not Skinny But Not Fatpodcast on Tuesday.

The 42-year-old elaborates on their dynamic in her upcoming memoir Once Upon a Trainwreck: The Fall and Rise of a Child Star, which releases on Oct. 6. She shared that she and LeBeouf came from very different childhood backgrounds, which she believes contributed to their incompatibility. When asked by host Amanda Hirsch what caused the then-14-year-old and 12-year-old to not get along, Romano said it had to do with how they were being “raised.”

She described LaBeouf’s upbringing as “vagrant, fun, but also very chaotic and very scary.” Still, she credited him as being a “legend” for securing his own manager at a young age by calling people in the phonebook.

“He needed it because of his childhood and the upbringing that he was having was so bad,” she said. “So somehow he had a dream and he made it happen for himself. And I don’t know if his parents were like, ‘If you want this, go find somebody,’ but he made it happen.”

As for Romano, she had been raised to be “type A” and “exactly like” her Disney character Ren Stevens, so the two were polar opposites.

“You know your lines, you hit your marks, you don’t mess up, you’re a New York kid,” she continued.

As for LeBeouf, he has been open about his difficult childhood and even wrote a semi-autobiographical movie about it, 2018’s Honey Boy.He previously shared his tumultuous relationship with his father, whom he described as “a drug-dealing clown,” and admitted that he was motivated to act well to win his dad’s praise.

“I became addicted to that kudos,” LaBeouf told The Hollywood Reporterin 2019. “It kind of fueled my way of working for a long time — just pining your own pain, and holding on to it, and not really ever dealing with it or questioning it, but just keeping it in a little bottle that you can pop the top on whenever it’s needed, when the switch needs to be flipped.”

Earlier on Tuesday, Romano took to Instagramto share a throwback photo of herself with LaBeouf and his father during the days of Even Stevens, which ran on Disney Channel from 2000 to 2003.

“Recently found this picture,” she captioned the pic. “Shia and I spent 3 years of our lives right next to each other in adjoining trailers, both of us enduring painful childhoods. If only we could have been there for each other, but we were each going through our own battles and could barely take care of ourselves.”

She added that the details in her upcoming memoir may “anger” some people, but she doesn’t “care anymore.”

In recent months, LeBeouf, 40, has faced some legal troubles of his own after getting arrested in February for an altercation outside of a bar in New Orleans during Mardi Gras. He later pleaded guilty to three misdemeanor battery charges and was given two years’ probation and a six-month suspended sentence.
