The 11 best new Netflix shows and movies in October, including Halloween favorites

Netflix isn’t waiting until Halloween to bring the scares this October.

A wave of horror movies lands on Oct. 1, ranging from Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho to ’90s slasher I Know What You Did Last Summer and Guillermo del Toro’s gothic romance Crimson Peak. For something less scary, the same day brings The Devil Wears Prada, all five Twilight movies and the entire Jason Bourne franchise.

There are also plenty of new releases to look forward to, including Florence Pugh’s East of Eden miniseries and Ben Affleck’s kidnapping thriller Animals. Political thriller The Diplomat and rom-com Nobody Wants This return for new seasons, while crime drama Lupin is back after a three-year absence.

‘East of Eden’

Florence Pugh stars as the villainous Cathy Ames in Netflix’s epic adaptation of the iconic 1952 novel. Her arrival changes the lives of brothers Adam (Christopher Abbott) and Charles Trask (Mike Faist), setting off a family saga that spans two generations.

‘The Devil Wears Prada’

The Devil Wears Prada 2 was a box-office hit earlier this year, but the original 2006 movie is still in a league of its own. Anne Hathaway plays an aspiring journalist who lands a job working for fearsome magazine editor Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep).

‘Psycho’

If you’re looking for a Halloween classic, Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho still delivers. Anthony Perkins is unforgettable as the deeply unsettling motel owner Norman Bates. If you enjoy it, Netflix is also adding Psycho II and Psycho III on the same date, so you can keep the marathon going.

‘Crimson Peak’

Frankenstein director Guillermo del Toro goes full gothic romance in Crimson Peak. Mia Wasikowska plays an aspiring writer who marries a mysterious aristocrat (Tom Hiddleston) and moves into his crumbling family mansion.

‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’

A hook-wielding killer is out for revenge in the beloved ’90s slasher. Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddie Prinze Jr. and Ryan Phillippe play four friends targeted a year after covering up a deadly car accident.

‘Animals’

Ben Affleck directs and stars opposite Kerry Washington in this thriller. They play a married couple forced to scramble for a ransom after their son is abducted, as secrets threaten to tear their seemingly perfect life apart.

‘The Diplomat’ Season 4

Keri Russell stars as Kate Wyler, a U.S. ambassador navigating a messy marriage to fellow diplomat Hal (Rufus Sewell). Season 4 raises the stakes with a betrayal involving Hal and President Grace Penn (Allison Janney).

‘Sacrifice’

A charity gala takes a bizarre turn in this wild dark comedy. Chris Evans plays a struggling movie star taken hostage by Anya Taylor-Joy’s doomsday cult leader, who plans to sacrifice him in a volcano.

‘Nobody Wants This’ Season 3

An agnostic podcaster falling for a rabbi was just the beginning for Joanne (Kristen Bell) and Noah (Adam Brody). Season 3 finds the unlikely couple moving in together after recommitting to their relationship.

‘Lupin’ Part 4

Omar Sy plays Assane Diop, a gentleman thief inspired by the fictional master of disguise, Arsène Lupin. After three years away, the French series picks up with Assane behind bars and hoping to leave his life of crime behind.

‘The One About Matthew Perry’

Three years after Matthew Perry’s death at 54, this documentary series looks at the man behind his famous Friends character. Family and friends share their memories alongside previously unreleased photos and videos from his life.
