It’s the 40th anniversary of the Zelda series this year, and we’re celebrating in style.
That’s right, folks. I’m going to replay my favorite Zelda game, 1987’s Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. You can replay the game yourself on Nintendo Switch Online’s NES Classics if you are a member.
No, I’m not trying to be funny or nothing. I really DO love Zelda 2. When I was around 11 years old, we were able to get the game(along with a copy of Shadowgate) from a local consignment store. I played it every day until I got stuck right before the Three-Eye Rock palace.
Eventually, I figured out you had to use the “Spell” spell at the end of that hidden town to get the key in order to progress through the palace and eventually battle a toothbrush-looking mofo of a dragon.
Good times.
I wrote about my experience with the Zelda <a href="https://comicvibe.com/5-best-arcade-racing-games-of-all-time-ranked/” title=”5 Best Arcade Racing Games Of All Time, Ranked”>games helping me process grief back in 2022 for Tedium.
I’m also going to check out a version of Zelda 2 for PC called ZaLia, which promises to update some of the things that made the original a bit rough around the edges. We’ll see how it goes.
Until then, here’s my contribution to the Zelda 40th anniversary tributes:
You can try the Nintendo Switch Online service free for a week. One month costs $3.99, three months cost $7.99 and a year costs $19.99 — but the best value is a family plan that costs $34.99 a year and accommodates eight people with free Nintendo Accounts. If you want to play Switch game online(Splatoon 2, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, etc.), you’ll need to sign on with this service anyway. The Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Packupgrade is required to play Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis and Game Boy Advance games, along with other benefits.
