NORWICH, U.K. (WKRC) – A man allegedly snatched a woman’s handbag, then was chased down by individuals dressed as comic book heroes.
According to The Guardian, a man dressed as Batman chased down a suspected thief and got her stolen handbag back.
The report states that 25-year-old Sonni Mason was attending a friend’s dress party in a Batman costume on Saturday night when he witnessed a handbag being snatched while a woman was waiting in line to enter a nightclub in Norwich, England.
The outlet reported that Mason was accompanied by others who were in superhero costumes, including Poison Ivy, Mister Fantastic and another unspecified character from the Batman franchise.
After flagging down police officers on their way, the group was able to catch up with the alleged thief, but discovered he was no longer in possession of the bag. The group received a tip, however, which led them to a wall on the perimeter of Norwich Cathedral, which was around 300 meters from where the bag was taken.
The group initially attempted to use a roll of toilet paper to get the bag down, but Mason ultimately was able to scale the wall and retrieve the stolen property, then return it to the owner with all the contents still inside.
The Guardian reported that most of the incident was captured on video and posted to Mason’s TikTok account, where he wrote, “On a night out for a friends birthday, someone swiped someone bag over a pack of cigarettes out of spite . myself as Batman, Poison Ivy, Mr Fantastic and various other heroes chased him down.”
Mason, a cafe worker in London, told SWNS that he hopes the incident “can inspire people to be a little bit more like Batman. Not so much the running around in the dark in a costume but helping others out. I didn’t expect to be scaling up a wall. Everyone needs a little bit of Batman. You have to be brave, bold and kind. I would hope everyone else would do the same, whether or not they are wearing a cape or a cowl.”
The Guardian reported that the Norwich Police Department issued the following statement regarding the matter:
“Officers on routine night-time economy patrols in Norwich were approached by a member of the public, on Saturday September 19, who requested help to find a missing bag. Following inquiries at the scene, the bag was located with all of its contents intact and subsequently returned to its owner.”
