Star Wars producers have enlisted director Jon Watts to helm the next instalment in the series’ “Skywalker Saga.”
Watts — who directed the first three films in Tom Holland’s Spider-Man series as well as co-created Star Wars’ Skeleton Crew Disney+ series — will guide Episode X, Variety reports, the first film in what’s been reported as the next trilogy in the “Skywalker Saga.”
The original trilogy — A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi — was followed by a prequel trilogy (The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, Revenge of the Sith) and then the most recent trilogy, 2015’s The Force Awakens, 2017’s The Last Jedi, and 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker.
In 2024, Star Wars producers revealed that Simon Kinberg, the screenwriter of a handful of X-Men movies, would pen the planned trilogy; while not much is known about the new trilogy, it’s believed Daisy Ridley’s Rey would play a central role in the story, the Hollywood Reporter writes.
Star Wars’ big screen output slowed in the half-decade after The Rise of Skywalker, with this past summer’s The Mandalorian and Grogu the first Star Wars film since 2019. Another standalone film, the Ryan Gosling-starring Starfighter, is due out in May 2027, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of A New Hope.
Star Wars has not yet confirmed Watts’ hiring for Episode X.
